Maybe I’m just doing this all wrong and someone can suggest a whole new schema but, for now, I’d like to understand what’s happening.

I’m projecting slides for a church service. Pre and post service we have a presentation of announcement slides that just rolls at a 10 second interval. Typically 5 to 15 slides. To change to the presentation for the actual service, I have embedded a hidden slide and put a hyperlink to the service on it. Since I never know what slide will be showing when I need to change, I have copied the hidden slide so that there is one after each announcement slide. Kludgey, but works. Just hit H and click on the hyperlink. (We have two different services, so there are actually two links on the page.)

Normally this works fine. And normally I just take the previous week’s announcement presentation and update it for the next week. And sometimes I find that the hyperlinks have become changed. And while I see part of the pattern, other parts escape me.

Generally, the service presentation is in the same folder as the announcements. So I name the two service presentations ‘830service’ and 1100service’ and hyperlink to them. And when I first did that, I found that the hyperlink was named ‘830service’ and ‘1100service’ respectively. I still have that slide. The piece of the problem that I have partially figured out is that when I move the previous weeks announcements into a subfolder and then retrieve and edit it the links no longer work and when I look at the link it now reads ‘announcements/830service’. Hmmm, so, ok, it is trying to keep track of the file it was linked to and updating itself somehow, though it seems to be wrong because there is no file named 830service in folder announcements.

Anyhow, OK, maybe I can figure out how to avoid that in the future. But, confusion #2, now, when I try to change and update the slide, the link reads ‘c:My Documents830service.ppt’ rather than just ‘830service’. Actually it is worse than that because there is also a pointer to the individual slide, though in this case it is the first slide. I can see how that might be handy in other circumstances. My concern is that somehow the first slide of the service presentation might get renamed and then the link would probably fail. I don’t even know where the slide name is coming from.

Umm. Well, that’s mostly it. I bet there are other boojums hiding in this hyperlink thing. If anyone can offer hints on controlling them, I would be pleased. Oh, yeah. The only way I have found to fix the links on all those slides is to delete them all and replace them with a corrected one. Is there a search and replace kind of method that would do this more automatically?
