I’ve often made HTML slideshows with Irfanview but I don’t know how to make one I can put up on my domain that will auto-advance each picture after a user prescribed interval.

I know this must be pretty old hat to many but can you recommend something please?

Maybe the HTML code for Irfanview’s created show can be modified to insert a timer, but if so I don’t know how to do it.

Does it have to be HTML? I’ve used LPJ Slideshow for JPEGs…

Well, I’m looking for something that I can put up on my web domain for casual users to view, in an automatic mode where the pix advance at some preset time. Strangely, I just looked at LPJ a few minutes ago and I think it requires PHP for web display and I don’t think my domain has PHP. Can you enlighten me further, please? Thanks…

Edited to add:
Excuse me that wasn’t LPJ I just looked at. It was something else. However, I’ve used LPJ for several years to make locally viewable slide shows and I love the program and its customizability! But I don’t know if the EXE file can be put on the web.

Here is a version I use from time to time, that uses Javascript.

How about PowerPoint?

How about PowerPoint?

Thanks for the suggestion, Steve, but I don’t have Office installed and have never done anything at all with the Open Office equivalent. It may come down to that if I can’t find something else.

You might consider one of the Lightbox-like JavaScript libraries. These generally require a combination of different files that you then might need to update periodically (if they have security flaws, for example). The advantage of JavaScript is that it can accomplish smooth transition effects on nearly all desktop browsers, with very few compatibility concerns. Unless the user has disabled JavaScript.

Here’s one I’m considering using for smaller sized images: http://www.digitalia.be/software/slimbox2 (requires the jQuery library). However, on my sites I designed my own, somewhat unsophisticated script that layers on top of a framed design. Example: http://jeffersonscher.com/photos/Maui07/AroundMaui. Not sure whether either of those would be of interest.

=== Edit ===
Oops, SlimBox does not include automatic advance. Not sure what gave me that idea.

Al,
If all that is needed is a simple uncontrolled presentation of a series of photos, a simple animated gif should work.

The problem with animated gifs is precisely that they are gifs, rather than jpgs. There is no such thing as animated jpgs, and converting jpgs to gifs often leads to signifiant loss of quality.

A simple animated GIF of 80 wedding photos – 35 meg? Sorry, I don’t think that would cut it.

This has been a very frustrating day for me! I’ve installed and removed a number of software products that “claim” to be able to produce video slideshows for the WEB and none was acceptable. Either they don’t run correctly or at all, produce .MOV files, don’t produce auto-advancing slides, etc. And these are all “for fee” software mind you. I got my list of software to try from this review:
Photo Slideshow Software Review 2009 – TopTen
In deference to a couple of you who have made suggestions that I’ve looked at, you should understand that I have a number of slideshows that I want to create for the benefit of local friends and family members around the country. Some of these shows will have 50-100 slides, so I can’t take the time to do manual coding of things like javascript or whatever. I absolutely need a GUI, preferably one that is drag-n-drop for photo entry.

The closest I’ve come is the one in the right-most column of the review, from a German company. It produces a nice result in HTML form but the slides won’t auto-advance as they’re supposed to do. I’ve written to them with this question and don’t know if they’ll bother to respond. Their local (PC) copy runs beautifully, just as it’s supposed to, full screen and all.

I hope a good soul Lounger will be able to provide another GUI-clue for me to try. I don’t mind paying a fair price, but I do want to know if it will do the job I want before I fork over my money. Thanks for listening!

PS With all this UN-INSTALLING I’ve done today, I thank heaven for Revo Uninstaller! It’s unbelievable how much left over garbage it has found just in this one day of trial and tribulation!

PPS Just in case some of you would like to see what I’m trying to do, here’s a link to a page of photos of mine and Billie’s wedding, consisting of 80 photos, produced with Irfanview:

Hi Al,
I’ve mentioned this software before, but hesitated to mention it now because I am no longer using it. BUT when I was using Smartpix Manager from Xequte software. It is a $39 software but it did work wonderfully for quite a white. Under it’s submenus is an all html stylish image indexes for your web site with their wizard.
Only reason I moved on was that I got into some flash slideshow stuff under Jalbum.
PM me if you need.

Thanks Bob! I knew there was someone else who had some good luck with this but I couldn’t remember who! I’ll give it a try.

FREE HTML Image Gallery Tools – Freeware lists a number of options including JAlbum, which I’ve had success with before. I hope you find one that works for you.

Yes, Jalbum has auto-advancing slide shows. This might not be apparent at first glance, or it might depend on the skin chosen, but there is a little “screw-like” arrow that is the icon for a slide show. Maybe the icon could be changed…

THANK YOU for the pointer, and to Jefferson for his comment about the skins. Doh, you pointed out this software (JAlbum) way, way back in [post=”553643″]Post 553643[/post] and I had that old copy in my software repository (huge) but not installed! BTW, there is an update to 8.3.5 on his web site.

I’ve been playing around with it this morning and I LOVE what I see! I think I’ll send him a “donation” for his efforts. I had one false start when it came to the “Publish” button. I thought it would let me pick a local folder or my own web domain. But it uploaded my trial run to his web at Photo albums by bigaldoc.

It took me a few minutes to find the screen where it showed that the actual HTML code was saved in My Documents, My Albums. So, I’m now gonna try to re-make that project from the 10 pix test, to the full 80 images and put it up on my web site rather than his. I figured out that you can SKIP the publish step and just use the files in My Documents, so I’ll give it a try this afternoon.

Thanks again, Alan. As always you are a fountain of software knowledge and I appreciate it!

PS In case anyone looks at my test, the first 11 slides are from the civil ceremony required in France and the rest are from Billie and her “girls” getting ready for the church service by our Army Chaplain. When I post the whole 80 slides to MY web page (hopefully) there will also be pictures from our honeymoon in the Bavarian Alps!

This is a followup post about JAlbum’s slideshow software. I’ve made several slideshows with it and I really like the software! I figured out not only how to “publish” directly to my own domain, but how to put links to those on the JAlbum web site (see the link in the above post).

During my work yesterday, I learned that there is a new version with SIGNIFICANT and nice additions. Here’s a link to what was in the newsletter email: Jalbum newsletter. There’s a link at the bottom of that page to the Release Notes.

The program has loads of submitted skins, most of which aren’t to my liking, but I’ve put THREE slideshows on my domain for family and friends to look at. Each uses a different skin, all of which have auto-play capability. If you care to sample, you can go to AlHoffman.Org and there is a “picker bar” right under the flags and the first three entries are for slideshows.

The guy does nice work. And it’s FREE unless you want to donate to his efforts.

Hi Al, just a slight correction with your statement. Jalbum is free (never any charge) however the skin selected that runs over Jalbum most likely will require some registration depending on what you want to put up with.
Don’t get me wrong, I use Jalbum, love it, and I’ve registered (i.e. paid for) the Banalbum skin – one that I’ve tried and really dug into – figured out how it works and like it’s output. The registration on this one removes a ‘rotating banana’ when the album loads – and is dependent on the domain registered to the skin.
To see ‘this’ skin in action here is one of my more recent entries on my site: More Recent Album Entry
Again, Jalbum is free (and a pretty good software in it’s own right) but most skins used might require some $$’s.

… but most skins used might require some s.

I haven’t seen anything in any of the skins I’ve tried so far that looked like I had to pay. But my ony disappointment so far is finding a skin that will allow MP3 background music in a slideshow. The only one I’ve managed to get working is FotoPlayer and I’ve downloaded and installed ALL the other skins that say they’re capable of background music. I just made a post in the forum to see what I can learn about my obvious stupidity.

I had a look at your website and the music player is indeed working (I’m using Firefox 3.5.3 in case that is relevant). You need to click on the little dynamic icon (like graphic equaliser lights) in the bottom right. In the dialog that pops up, click the play button and wait for the music to stream.

Thanks Andrew. That’s the FotoPlayer skin I mentioned above and is the only one I’ve managed to get music playing. The other two JAlbum slideshows on my web page are using a skin called Chameleon which says it handles sound but I haven’t yet figured out how to do it.

Hi Al

IE 8 and the music works perfectly, I must be getting sentimental in my old age (don’t tell ‘she who must be obeyed’ at home) because the whole thing bought a lump to my throat.

I just realized that I never did say that I DID look at your web example and meant to ask if that white haired fella having the birthday is YOU???

I’m still “messing” with the various skins AND the Banalbum one IS one of the ones I noticed is a fee-registered example. I made a donation because I like the program so I still have to check the fact that there seems to be a “paid” or premium version of JAlbum but I can’t find the place I first saw it.

I also meant to include in my last post that another program that I’ve tried and am still fooling around with is S10 WebAlbums. The thing that’s “interesting” about this one is that it doesn’t generate all the little HTML files. It apparently uses javascript on the fly to create the slideshow. Fooling around with the various settings when I have time is taking a little time.

Nice to hear, and yep, that be me – but you know that thing about the white hair, the only time I see that is when I look at myself in the mirror (not too darn often).

The donation part was for Jalbum, they don’t have any ‘paid for pro’ version. They do charge for storage space beyong the regular (5MB I think), Jalbum is the vehicle that the skins work off – and the registered skins tend to offer more bang for the bucks – my opinion of course.

I also meant to include in my last post that another program that I’ve tried and am still fooling around with is S10 WebAlbums. I also tried Webalbums quite a while ago – I think what turned be off was the javascripting – wasn’t that straightforward to implement into my web site. What I like about Bananalbum is that you just point a URL to the index file in the skin directory and you’re off and running.
But hey, that’s me – everyone has their own ideas and wants/desires – that’s why there are so many skins available and most do run on Flash – so try a ton out, and find one that does everything you desire, then learn it well.
Most of all –

have fun – without the fun factor is just isn’t worth it – BobL
