HPFUD50.dll Stops SP-3 Install

I’ve never experienced anything involving Microsoft that couldn’t eventually be fixed…or a workaround that resolved an issue. Until now, that is. I’ve been running Windows XP Home since it came out and have kept up with the regular Windows updates over all those years. About six months ago I tried to install SP-3 (when I felt it was safe to do so!) and, on install, it stops dead in its tracks – locked on to the HPFUD50.dll file. An error message indicates “Windows can’t open this file” and the entire install is reversed. I’ve had an ongoing issue with at least three Microsoft technicians, via Email and telephone calls and – to date – no one can figure out why this is happening or a way around it. If anyone, anywhere can give me any assistance I would be forever grateful. Thanks!

This is definitely a Hewlett-Packard file

So it’s a universal driver plugin for a DeskJet printer as JoeP suspected.

I googled HPFUD50.dll file info and it is conceivable that your HPFUD50.dll is corrupt, missing;

“…Cause of Hpfud50.dll Errors

Hpfud50.dll errors are caused by situations that lead to the removal or corruption of the hpfud50 DLL file. ”

First of all I would search to see if that file exists. If it does and you don’t get an error message when you search, it’s possible you need to update it. There are some helpful ideas on the google results page. I started copy/pasting here, but decided that you could check them out in the event someone else posts your exact solution.

I would uninstall the printer and re-install it if necessary. I didn’t have my printer hooked up when I did my Win clean install installation.

Key to this is to totally uninstall any HP products & programs loaded on your machine. Make sure that your hardware is physically disconnected before you do this. Reboot & retry loading your SP3.If this is successful, you may then re-install your HP products. Good Luck.

I agree with Doc’s and Joe’s questions, also if you can tell us something about the other hardware, the PC itself.

The file, hpfud50.dll, is included in the full Windows XP SP3; un-extracted in i386 (hpfud50.dl_), and a backup copy in the sp3.cab, as can be seen if one extracts the content of the full SP3 update file (WindowsXP-KB936929-SP3-x86-###.exe); and present as a backup after SP installation.

HP also has a lot of good information, related to SP updates etc. depending on what kind of PC you have of course.

So, if you used Windows Update or MU, download the full SP as suggested by Doc. Restart the PC before installation, and close all open programs; it’s not always necessary to disable antivirus or antispyware programs, but if you do, disconnect from the net and remember to enable them when finished before connecting the PC again.

If this doesn’t work we perhaps will need the exact error message and/or part of the svcpack.log file.
