Hi I hope someone can advise. After recovering her laptop, my daughter has lost the hardware/software needed to connect wirelessly to the internet. There just isn’t anything there any more. In device manager the only network adapter installed is a Realtek PCIe FE Family controller . I have her connected via an ethernet cable but what happened to her wireless adapter?

What model Pavilion is it? Some models have a physical switch located on the front of the unit; other models have a heat-sensitive button above the keyboard rather than a switch.

If the wireless adapter is physically switched off then it won’t appear in Device Manager ‘cos the OS cannot see it.

      Hope this helps…

It’s a Pavilion 11 x 360 PC and the only button is the one for airplane mode off or on, which is currently on. Someone suggested that the WiFi card has died which I suppose is possible? Meaning she will have to buy a WiFi dongle.

      • #2170106

I didn’t realise it was a 360. Have you seen this wireless button PAVILION 360 topic?

        1. Press the Windows key. This takes you to the start screen.
        2. Type “wireless”. When you start typing, a search bar will open in the upper-right corner of the screen.
        3. Click on Change Wi-Fi Settings. …
        4. Click on Turn wireless devices on or off.
        5. Slide the button next to “WiFi” to the “On” position.

It would be unusual for the wireless adapter to just fail. It’s a combo unit… is the Bluetooth working/showing in Device Manager?

        • #2170120

I get “We couldn’t find wireless devices on this PC” and there’s no Bluetooth or unknown devices showing.

    • #2170096

Airplane mode on means wireless off, if there is any doubt check the manual for the PC about the function of the button.  The bios also may have a setting to enable or disable wifi.  And look in device manager for any “unknown device”.

no Bluetooth or unknown devices showing

Press Win R and type “msinfo32”, without the quotes.
      Expand “Components”, “Network”, “Adapter”.
Select Edit > Select All. Edit > Copy.
      Paste the info here please.

      cheers, Paul

Here is the easiest way to fix the wifi issue:

Do a search for Windows updates. See if any of them are for the internal wifi adapter. If so, then install only that one update. Now reboot.

This has always worked for me whenever my network adapter wouldn’t work.

Of course, you can always go to the HP website and look up the drivers for your HP Pavilion. There should be a driver there for the wifi adapter. Download and install it, and you should be back in business.

Thank you. Windows updates have been installing themselves almost daily since I have been working on this, ( and I have also searched for them, ) probably because my daughter did a recovery, and I have been into the HP diagnostics and updated all the drivers they offer. I have ordered a WiFi dongle which should arrive tomorrow and hopefully solve the problem, but many thanks for all the help everyone.

Did you ever just try toggling Airplane mode off?

I am very surprised that neither Windows Update nor the HP drivers fixed the problem.

That will definitely solve the problem!

Airplane mode has been off all the time.

        Ok, thanks.

Waste two minutes of your time and download this driver from HP…

In device manager go to view and show hidden devices. See if your wireless card shows up greyed out. If so, right-click uninstall and reboot. With luck it will reinstall.

Sorry, replying to both got confused.

I downloaded the driver but still can’t connect wirelessly.

There are quite a few hidden devices under “network adapters” but non that mention “wireless”, there’s Microsoft ISATAP Adapter (2 of them), MS kernel debug Network dapter, RAS Async Adapter, and 8 WAN Miniport with brackets after as follows (IKEv2), (IP), (IPv6), L2TP), (Network Monitor), (PPPOE), (PPTP), (SSTP)

There is no sign of your wifi hardware in your post so it seems your wifi hardware has failed catastrophically – unless it’s disabled in the BIOS?

      cheers, Paul

Thanks to all for trying. I’m now about to try the dongle that’s just arrived!
