My boss’s home computer crashed – with a virus – and several spyware programs – so we had to reload XP-Home twice. Don’t ask. Anyway, I have to reload the “Multimedia Audio Controller” and the “SM Bus Controller” and the “Video Controller” for this machine. There is a folder/directory of C:HPDRIVERS but then they kitchen-sink with every possible driver in there! How do I know which one to load? When I try the lovely HP website, it says reload from the System Restore shortcut on the menu blah blah blah. What a stupid idea! We’ve already experienced such a loss that the stupid icon is no longer there, so reloading from this so-called recovery is not an option.

The reason I’m asking which driver directory to use is that if you just use trial and error, the machine happily loads any of the drivers I ask and then locks up. That is why we are on install number two.

I’ve tried the usual tricks, and I really do not want to tell the boss’s family that sound no longer works on this machine and that they should just buy a whole new box. I would be pretty sure that wouldn’t be an HP…

This webpage has many links for the 753n, with the XP OS. Is this the same website you visited?

Yes. Note it does not have drivers; it refers you back to the pre-installed drivers.

          Eric,
Did you follow that link to the setup & install page and the installation of drivers page?

          More HP

Seems to follow in a logical order there.

Yes — but when you click through all of the HP stuff on that website, they just provide an update or two, but no original drivers. HP assumes the customer made a CD-ROM of the original drivers when they first bought the box. Unfortunately the boss did not.

I did find a surviving C:HPDRIVERS directory/folder and guessed at the audio drivers. It worked, and I’m not touching anything else with it!

Did you attempt to do a full system recovery following the instructions on this web page?

If that doesn’t work then you should be able to order a Recovery CD by following these instructions.

Thanks. I hadn’t found the F10 secret until you mentioned it. I’ll keep that in mind for next time! They are up and running “enough” for now…
