I have an HP Offie Jet 3830. I need to replace my black in cartridge. It currently has a 63 cart in place, but it is empty.

I tried to install a 63XL cart several times, but I get the error message “cartridge not compatible.”  The 63XL is listed as compatible on the HP website!

Is there any work around for this??  Or do I have to buy  the standard 63 cart?

Pull the cartridge out and look for shmoo on the electrical contacts. Might be dried ink, fingerprints, tape residue, etc. If so, clean it (gently) and reinstall to try again.

Another thing I’ve read in the past is that some printers don’t like mixing regular and high capacity cartridges. If your color is regular capacity, you might try pulling it and installing only the black XL to see if it will work (assuming the printer has a single-cartridge print mode).

No much in the way of schmoo on the cart. It’s brand new, just out of the cellophane.

The thing does have a 63 color ink cart installed, not a 63XL, and – as you said – there may be a problem mixing and matching the two types. (It did work with both regular black and  color carts installed.) Unfortunately, I do not have a full plain 63 black cart available. I just ordered one yesterday and I guess I’ll wait until it arrives to experiment with. It’s very frustrating, since the ‘Net sales sheets are full of 63XL carts and it took a real search to find a standard 63 cart these days!  I haven’t got the nerve to try installing both black and color 63XL carts . . . afraid I’ll totally loose my printer!

        Thanks for your suggestions.

Are you buying authentic HP cartridges or using “compatible” “refills?”
Hp is getting nasty about non authentic cartridges and blocking their use.

            Well, that’s pretty bad news!

The package housing the 63XL carts states: “Compatible with: HP”. Perhaps that mean you can put the carts on the same shelf as the printer, but don’t try to get them to work IN the thing!  <sigh>

Based upon what I’ve read here and my own recent experience with “HP Compatible” cartridges, you might now only be able to use, what PK mentioned above, Genuine HP cartridges, beginning with the next cartridge you need to replace (in this case the black one).

Your printer may have downloaded a firmware update in the last few years that fixed a security hole in the firmware, but also began enforcement of only using HP branded ink cartridges.

I had that happen in one of the printers I have…I installed a firmware update to patch a security hole (back in 2017 or 2018), but then a couple of years ago (just after the start of Covid) discovered the printer would no longer work with cartridges that were not HP branded and only listed themselves as “compatible” with HP printers.

If you can’t make the changes in the printer’s menu described below by @n0ads , then you’re very possibly in the same boat I am.  🙁  BTW, my printer exhibiting those symptoms is a lower end one I bought for $50 at a Wal Mart store, not via their website.

Yeah. Sounds like I’ll be visiting the HP website soon to buy their ink carts!  🙁

              Thanks everyone, for their comments.

              Cheers!

Your 3830 has a “single cartridge” mode that’s enabled by simply removing one of the cartridges.

Suggest you try removing the color cartridge and see if it’ll let you use the 63XL cartridge.

If it still says “cartridge not compatible”, try turning off Cartridge Policy and Cartridge Protection from the menu on the printer.

If “Cartridge Policy” is set to Authorized HP, it prevents the use of 3rd party cartridges.

If “Cartridge Protection” is set to Protect cartridges, it locks the cartridges to that specific printer (i.e. they can’t be used in another HP printer; even the exact same make/model!)

        These are interesting points.

I tried removing my (standard 63 color cart) and reinserted the new 63XL cart, but I still get the “imcompatible” message.

Changing the settings sounds promising, but my 3830 does not have the settings menu that you show. How do I get to image #1?  I can find other settings adjustments, but “Supply settings” doesn’t seem to exist here!

Any further info/suggestion would be most welcome.

        Cheers!

I don’t find the settings on my 8720 either.
But I get an acknowledgment for “Genuine HP Cartridges” when I replace them with “Genuine” HP Cartridges. So they are watching.
