I know there are some great KB articles here in AskWoody about the free upgrade from Win 7 Pro 64-bit to Win 10 Pro 64-bit without losing users, apps or data, but I didn’t find them.  Please point me to them.

Also, my Win 7 Pro 64-bit is MBR, but when I’m done with the free upgrade to Win 10  Pro 64-bit, I want to be GPT.  How do I do that, again without losing users, apps or data?  Please point me to the KBs first.

(If it makes a difference, I will be doing this on a Dell Optiplex 3010 MT.)

    Thanks.

my Win 7 Pro 64-bit is MBR, but when I’m done with the free upgrade to Win 10  Pro 64-bit, I want to be GPT.

Why ? Do you need more than 4 partitions in a volume ? Do you intend to updrade to Windows 11 (providing your PC is compatible) ?

MBR2GPT.EXE converts a disk from the Master Boot Record (MBR) to the GUID Partition Table (GPT) partition style without modifying or deleting data on the disk. The tool is designed to be run from a Windows Preinstallation Environment (Windows PE) command prompt, but can also be run from the full Windows 10 operating system (OS) by using the /allowFullOS option.

Alex5723 – thanks for fast response!

I want to make the post-upgrade Win 10 Pro 64-bit GPT because I will then replace the HDD with a NVMe M.2 SSD using some complicated steps, and that expects GPT.

(See https://www.askwoody.com/forums/topic/custom-modify-bios-in-dell-optiplex-to-boot-from-nvme-m-2/  but please come back here to comment on MBR to GPT.)

By the way, should I change from MBR to GPT first, while still in Win 7, or should I do it at the end, after a successful conversion to Win 10?

mbr2gpt is only included in Windows 10, I believe.  If you wanted to convert while still on windows 7, first backup is recommended, and then some free partition utilities may include MBR to GPT conversion.  AOMEI partition assistant discussion – https://www.diskpart.com/gpt-mbr/convert-mbr-to-gpt-without-data-loss.html
