Yes, I see the “Stop getting to know me” switch in settings, but does that really turn Cortana off? The old setting (Notebook, Settings, turn Cortana

      cortana.exe – everyone – deny:full control?

    • #41335

OK, but can you do it from the Windows user interface?

      You can in build 10586….

I’m finding a handful of disappearing options that concern me.

Sorry, I don’t know. I said that more as snark. I have been avoiding 10 as much as possible. Eventually I’ll have to upgrade at work (mandated) but it will be locked down LTSB.

It is how I keep the GWX virus from sneaking on to my 7 at home though.

You can turn off “Getting to know me,” which is “supposed” to turn off Cortana and delete the “info” collected on the computer. I think you have to go to the BING site to “supposedly” delete what MS knows.
You can open the search box and turn off all the related settings. From there you can access the BING site settings and try to limit things.
And then if you click the search box, the Cortana “O” still says “How can I Help you”

But (my opinion) I think MS has merged Search and Cortana and BING so that if you search for anything on your computer you are essentially using SearchCortanaBING. And I don’t think you can turn off search. And even it you don’t allow it to use the microphone, who knows…..

Yep. What got me started along this line… I set up Cortana to call me “Boss.” (Er.) Then I turned off Getting to Know Me, went to the web site and deleted everything. I brought Cortana up again to take screenshots – and she immediately called me “Boss.”

      Something’s fishy in Denmark…

      Snark appreciated!

Did you use Disk Cleanup, CCleaner, then reboot in between? LOL

I appreciated the snark too but all kidding aside, that’s exactly how I handle Cortana in the November build. The only difference is that the file name is searchui.exe. I removed all user permissions including System and TrustedInstaller and gave only myself full control. Then I set read, write, and execute to “deny”.

Don’t fall for that slider that “disables” Cortana, it’s a fake. This virus still runs in the background afterward.

I don’t get the preview builds, so I have no idea about the inability to turn off Cortana in those. However I will put this out there. I have no proof, just a gut feeling about what’s going on.

No company in their right mind would risk the ire of a large part of their user base by putting a virus such as GWX on user’s computers unless they expected the benefits to outweigh the costs. Since the only apparent purpose of GWX is to move users to Windows 10, it is only a first step. The real virus is in Windows 10.

MS let everyone get all worked up over telemetry and eventually let their mouthpieces in the tech press debunk the idea that telemetry was spying on everyone. This was all a ruse to divert attention from the real virus: CORTANA.

They are really pushing Cortana and encouraging people to use it. That’s the one doing the spying and loading of all your personal data back to the mothership. They made it “built-in” to the OS and nearly impossible to stop unless you have system admin or programmer level skills. Even if you turn off the slider to disable it, it’s still running in the background. If you try to end the task, it will regenerate itself like a good virus should.

No way do I allow this thing to run on my laptop. If a future update makes it impossible to stop Cortana, then it will be impossible for me to allow Windows to remain. It’s already a dual-boot system with Linux Mint. It would only take about an hour for me to backup data files and wipe a partition clean.

Byron is right. It is running all the time (see Task Manager), two processes (at least). Ending them is to no avail, they restart.

What is the point of using Windows 10 if the new components get blocked by unusual and likely to cause problems procedures?
Is there anything wrong inherently with Windows 7?
Or otherwise the Windows 10 used like Windows 7 by design is the LTSB Edition, but that is only a branch of the Enterprise Edition and last time when I tested, it had few functionality issues. A way to emulate the LTSB closely on another edition is to use PowerShell and remove all Universal Apps.
But again, what is wrong with Windows 7?

I have a feeling that by the time they upgrade the Pro edition, there will be a way through Group Policies to truly disable Cortana and Bing Search.

I can’t imagine businesses upgrading if these options disappear.

Dan’s a great guy, but his approach is overly simplistic. Just logging out of your Microsoft Account, or switching to a new one created solely for this purpose (my preferred technique) doesn’t stop the snooping. Or if it does, Microsoft has never described what’s being turned off.

Instead of associating the snooped information with a Microsoft Account, it will simply be associated with something else – a computer license id, an advertising account, or even just an IP address. That means the collected data is one step removed from the Microsoft Account, but it’s just a tiny step.
