My son just switched phone providers, and had to give up his Nokia Lumia 1020 (Windows OS) for a Google Pixel XL (Android OS).
Is there a free way for him to transfer his contacts/phone numbers from the Lumia to the Google phone?

AskWoody_MVPFebruary 5, 2017 at 4:02 pm #1590495I’m not sure if there’s anything that will do it in one step, but if there is somebody else may know. The method I prefer is a three-step method involving exporting and importing the contacts in csv format, with an in-between step of adjusting the field names.
Android phones require you to have a Google account (whether or not he chooses to use that for email is up to him), and that account’s “Contacts” are used by the android phone. So the transfer process would entail:
-
[*]Export the Lumia’s contacts in csv format.
[*]Transfer the csv file to your computer where you can work with it.
[*]Open the csv file with Excel, and change the column names to names compatible with Google Contacts.
[*]Save the file back as a csv file.
[*]Login to the Google account on your computer, using the credentials he setup on the Pixel phone.
[*]Go to google.com/contacts, and import the csv file.
[*]The contacts will be imported into the Google account and automatically synced to the phone. To get a list of the field names you’ll need for step 3, you can login to the Google account (step 5), go to google.com/contacts, and export a csv of the existing contacts. It may be a list of one record or even none, but at least you’ll be able to open the google csv and see the column names. Rename the Lumia csv’s columns to correspond. (You don’t need to rearrange the columns, the import will put the data in the right places as long as you’ve got google-recognized field names.)
(FWIW, I routinely use this export/import method to cleanup my Google contacts with Excel.)

AskWoody_MVPFebruary 5, 2017 at 11:34 pm #1590505I see there’s an import function in Google Contacts that supposedly will import Outlook.com contacts. However, the migration is handled by a third party, ShuttleCloud.com.
Still, out of curiosity I thought I might test it out to see if it handled the migration properly … but I balked at ShuttleCloud’s Terms of Service. Nowhere in ShuttleCloud’s TOS or Privacy Policy does it say ShuttleCloud won’t keep my contacts’ info.
Google’s import dialog box says, “you’ll need to give ShuttleCloud temporary access to your contacts data, including names & email addresses,” but ShuttleCloud’s TOS seem less clear. Quoting from their TOS and Privacy Policy:
“Under the terms of and subject to the restrictions in this Agreement, ShuttleCloud will provide its electronic mail and address book migration tool (the “Product”) to User during the term of this Agreement.”“This Agreement will be effective as of the date the User first accesses or uses the Product and, unless sooner terminated as herein provided, will continue in perpetuity.”
“User may discontinue its use of the Product and terminate this Agreement at any time without notice and its sole discretion.”
“ShuttleCloud Corp., a Delaware Corporation, provider of the ShuttleCloud electronic mail and address book migration service, (“we” or “us”) will collect and analyze, when you use the ShuttleCloud electronic mail and address book migration product (the “Product”), certain non-personally-identifiable information such as meta-data generated and stored on your computer systems and collected through your electronic mail account(s), and the Internet protocol (IP) address used to connect your computer to the Internet; computer and connection information such as your browser type and version, operating system, and platform; and Product usage patterns and trends. By using the Product, you have consented to the collection and use of the data provided to us as outlined in this Privacy Policy.”
(Emphases, above, are mine.)
There is no clear indication that the Agreement is temporary, how the User goes about terminating the Agreement, or whether ShuttleCloud deletes the information it collects once the Agreement is terminated. (“Without notice”? Really? Then how does ShuttleCloud know you terminated the Agreement? There is nothing on ShuttleCloud’s webpage or FAQ, either.)
No thanks. I’ll stick to my “export csv-import csv” routine. It’s easy enough to export a csv from Outlook.com and import into Google without exposing your data to some unknown third party.
