• How to suppress document map?

I’m referring to the set of page thumbnails that appear on the left side of the window when a document is opened. I don’t know what it’s really called because I’ve never wanted to use it.

A few weeks ago Word 2003 spontaneously began displaying this thing every time I open a file. How do I make it stop?

In an earlier thread (now lost), someone suggested erasing Normal.dot and letting Word create a new one. That was a reasonable suggestion but not an attractive one, since it would take me hours to rebuild the styles I have in the template.

Today I finally got around to retrieving a copy of the template from another machine on which Word functions correctly. I installed it on the machine where Word is misbehaving, and nothing changed.

I need to pursue this further. What else could it be?

If it is the document map, it’s toogled by a command in the View menu.

However, that generally shows a list of headings etc rather than thumbnails.

You can always try renaming the normal.dot as OLDnormal.dot (rather than deleting it) and seeing if it helps. If not, you can always reinstate the old.

On the menu bar, go to View and deselect Thumbnails
