I got a new laptop a couple of weeks and had the store install Windows 10. In all the setting it up with my preferred software, I didn’t notice that Explorer is still grouping by date when you go to save. I looked up my old notes on how to stop this, but they don’t work now since “group by” is no longer available under View/Current View.

How do I stop this now?

    TIA

@areader, what do you see when you right-click on a blank area in the File Explorer right panel? I get a context menu with several options, the first three being “View,” “Sort by,” and “Group by”. Clicking on the arrow for “Group by” yields me several categories, including Name, Date modified, and Type. What do you see–does any of those options give you the functionality you’re looking for?

        To remove grouping, select “(None)”.

“None” wasn’t there before, or I didn’t see it. But choosing it solved my problem. Thank you!

I take back my answer. I wrote a reminder for myself, then went back to Explorer to recheck the steps. “None” isn’t there any more. How could it not be there (my original problem), then be there, and now it’s disappeared again. Arrgh!

Once you have selected None for Group by that option will disappear.
If you select one of the other Group by choices. Close and reopen you will see the (None) option available again.

Unlike the other options that stay marked to let you know what has been chosen, the None option disappears once selected.

That makes no sense to me!

Next question: this used to be a global fix. Do it once, and all folders from then on no longer grouped by date. That’s not true any more. Is there a global reset for this?

Is there a global reset for this?

To totally disable Group by there are some PowerShell scripts or manual Registry hacks, but no actual global setting that I’m aware of.
I think it is easiest to download the free open source WinSetView app at the link below and use its settings to disable all Group by.

Sorry for the delay in answering. Real life interfered. I’ve downloaded this and will give it a try.

        Thank you.

Facetiously: Why does MS repeatedly ruin things by  removing capabilities and/or “upgrading” perfectly usable tweaks we’ve used for years?

Less than a month ago, with help from you folks, I successfully made my Win10 computer stop grouping my files by date. Today, in a “fixed” folder, the files are suddenly grouped by date again. How could this happen and how do I permanently stop it from happening again?

      TIA
