how do you set a files zoom property so that it continually opens on a particular factor, say 75%?

You could record a macro. Go to Tools -> Macro -> Record New Macro… You get a dialog box where you have to give the macro a name. If you want it to run every time you open the document in question, then you must call it AutoOpen. (If you want it to run when you create a new documnet based on the template in question then call it AutoNew.)
After naming your macro and clicking OK you then do what you want to do i.e. View->Zoom->75%->OK, then click the stop recording button. That’s all there is to it. You should find that next time you open that document it will be at a 75% (or whatever you set) zoom level.

The reason i ask is b/c i’ve done it before & it didn’t involve macros, i’ve just forgotten how to do it.

If you save the document with the zoom set at what you want, the next time document is opened it will open to “saved” zoom setting.

What I have done in the past is open the normal.dot file on my system, make a change (such as add a word test and then delete the word), change the zoom to the desired setting, save the normal.dot and close. Exit Word and restart and it should reopen Word with the new normal.dot and its new zoom. All new documents based on normal.dot will have this zoom. You would have to do this for each template – to effect new documents based on this template.
My understanding is that this is a document specific setting and not an environment setting and, therefore, the setting must be done in the template(s) that you use.
      This has been my experience/workaround.
