Most of the articles I see about setting up a mesh wifi system look like this:

    Point1 <– Router –> Point2

But I want to install a mesh wifi system that looks like this:

    Router –> Point1 –> Point2

My internet connection is at the front of the house, and I want a mesh point at the back of the house and then another one in separate building in the back yard.  The router will not be in between the two points. Will such a setup work?

Point 1 should be an Access Point, or a Router in Access Point mode.
Assign the Access Point a static IP address and turn off the DHCP which will allow the Router to supply the IP address for Point 2. This can avoid double NAT.
Point 1 should then act as a relay for the signal going to the other location.

      See “Access Point” here.
