In XL97, does Format, Sheet, Background, (etc.) do what you want?

I’ve inserted a jpeg onto a spreadsheet? I want to send it behind the text in the cells. order>send backward doesn’t seem to work.

It works if I open a new sheet. However if it’s a sheet where I’ve already formatted the cell color, then the pic still doesn’t show.

So, if you set the cell color to None, then picture should be visable?

The solution is really convoluted. To send the photo behind the text in not possible, however, you can send the text in front of the photo.

If you do not have the camera tool on your toolbar, do this first (right click on toolbar, select customize, the commands tools camera, drag to toolbar).

Next select the cells you wish to print with the picture (NOTE: the picture isn’t inserted at this point) and click on the camera tool. The cursor will change to a thin lined plus. Select a blank sheet and click anywhere. You will then get a graphic image of the cells selected that is linked to the original (NOTE: this image a dynamic link to the original – changes on the 1st sheet will be reflected live on the 2nd sheet).

Select this image of your cells, right click, select format picture, colors and lines fill no fill & line no line.

        Insert your picture.

Drag your cell image over the picture.

        Send picture to back.

This isn’t a great solution but it works.

      Hi KT,
Is the sheet protected by any chance? That would gray out the background option.
      Hope that helps.

KT, not answering your question, sorry. But a bmp can add a lot of needless space to a spreadsheet- a gif or jpg can cut out a lot of that bloat.

This line was at the bottom of the Excel 2000 Help item on watermarks:

Background patterns do not print and are not retained in individual worksheets or items that you save as Web pages. However, if you publish an entire workbook as a Web page, the background is retained.

      Hi KT,
I don’t know if this is still of any interest to you, but just for information, the background option would also have been disabled if she had more than one sheet selected at the time.
      FWIW.
PS Yup it’s really annoying that you can’t print backgrounds!
