I did two W7 installs but stupidly forgot to note which product key was used on each PC. Now I had to replace the drive in one of them and re-install W7. How can I see the product key on the other install so I know which one to use to register the re-install?

Hi Sooty2 and welcome to the Lounge!

Download and use Nirsoft’s Produkey to identify the key to your Windows 7 installations. Hope this helps.

OK, thanks for the recommendation, since you’re an expert I’ll take that as proof that it’s not possible from within windows. I always worry if those third party tools are going to spread my product key around the ‘net…

Nirsoft will not spread your product key around the internet. I also use SIW free version. This app will give you more info on you system than you want to know.

Even if it does spread your key round the net, you will be the rightful key user and will able to use W7 with that key.

      cheers, Paul

Another such product is KeyFinder: http://www.magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder/

Probably not if a thousand systems (or even a few less than that ) suddenly show up at Microsoft’s door with the same key…they’ll kill it pretty quick.

Exactly! I was thinking it would be a dfficult phone call when I have to speak to that guy in Mumbai to validate my re-install.

      Sooty, hi !

You do not have to know which key goes where, just load W7, type the keys and the one accepted will be good. Might even be that both will be accepted.

I think that W-7 is not that fussy about this.

      Be good……….Jean.
