My friend has forgotten the password of a pst file she set up on our LAN and would like the system administrator to reset the password. Our SA does not know where to find the password to reset it. Should resetting the password be possible for the SA to do, and if so, where is it stored and what is the file called? Thanks.

This is a PST file you say? If I’m not off my rocker (and that’s certainly possible) the password is stored in the PST file itself. I don’t think the password can be reset. I tend to think that there is a way to remove it but I can’t think of how to do that – this can’t be an isolated problem. I mean, no one forgets their passwords, right? grin

There are password cracking tools that work on Microsoft Office applications that can be found on the web. Whether there are any for Outlook *.pst files, I do not know. Not that I’ve had occasion to test it myself, but I also thought that the password was kept inside the *.pst file.

Just came across this – Outlook Password Recovery Key – at DaveCentral. I’d certainly pay $45 to recover my .pst crazy

Thanks to all who replied. The tech support people for Exchange were able to get her access to the file, but they did not tell her how. We don’t know if they used one of these recovery keys or if someone figured out how to reset the password.
