My question arises from something mentioned in a different thread. (See the thread entitled “How to block text messages but not phone calls from unknown numbers,” which I started in this forum two days ago.) One of the responses advised reporting spam messages by forwarding them to Verizon, my mobile phone provider. I need more advice, because I haven’t been able to figure out how to do that. I’m asking by starting a new thread, because this is a different subject than that presented by my original question, and I don’t want this new question to get lost in the shuffle in the earlier thread, where there have already been a bunch of messages.

I have a Galaxy A03s. As stated, Verizon is my mobile phone provider.

In the other thread it was suggested that in order to report a message as spam, I could simply forward it to “spam” or to “7726”. I was given a link to a Verizon page, which said essentially the same thing.

I tried it, but without success. Forwarding to either of those addresses apparently isn’t possible without some additional step that I’ve been unable to figure out.

Here’s the problem. Ordinarily, when I send an original text message to someone, as soon as I’ve entered both the address and some text in the message box, a green button appears. Tap the button, and the message is sent. Sometimes when I’m replying to a business (such as a restaurant reservation service, asking me to confirm that I’m going to show up), a further step is required. Hitting the green button produces a message accompanied by a “send” button. The message warns that there may be charged if I hit “send.” Still, tap “send” and the message is sent. These are the only two ways of sending texts that I’ve ever seen.

Forwarding something specifically to “spam” or “7726” doesn’t work that way, at least not on my phone. After I tap “forward” and then enter “spam” in the address box, I get the message “no results found” (presumably meaning that the word “spam” couldn’t be found among my contacts). If I enter “7726” in the address box, the message just sits there, without anything else to tap, either to send the message immediately or to take me to a next step of tapping something else in order to send it. Under the address box appears a list of my contacts which contain the number 7726, and I can tap any of them to add them as recipients, but that obviously does me no good for purpose of reporting spam to Verizon. The only other “tappable” thing that appears is a “+” to right of the address box, but tapping that merely makes another address box pop up. I assume that that’s for the purpose of entering a second number, but that seems pointless when the idea is simply to forward the message to “spam” or “7726.”

Instead of entering “spam” or “7726” in the address box, I also tried entering one of my contacts after I had tapped forward. That produces word “Done.” Tapping “done” produces the green button, whereupon tapping the button forwards the message. So forwarding messages is possible, just not to “spam” or “7726.”

I also tried creating a new contact, which I named “Report Spam.” I tried to give it an address of “7726”, but the phone insisted on making it “772-6”, same as it would if those four numbers were merely the beginning of a longer string of numbers intended to form a phone number. And I can’t create an address of “spam” at all, since only numbers can be entered. So it apparently isn’t possible even to create in my contacts the address to which spam messages can be forwarded. (I therefore deleted “Report Spam.”)

I can create a new text message of my own and then enter 7726 for the recipient. When I do that the green button does appear, but that hardly does me any good for the purpose of forwarding spam text messages.

So what, in my benighted intellectual state, am I missing?

Any advice will be sincerely appreciated.

Tap and hold your finger on the individual text message you want to send to Verizon’s spam unit. Now, that message will change color and you’ll see three dots (on top of each other from top to bottom) in the upper right corner of your messaging app. Remove your finger from the individual message.

Tap those three dots to bring up a context menu and select the word “Forward” from that menu. That should then bring up a screen asking you for the person or place to forward the message to. Type in 7726 for Verizon’s spam unit. Below that, the message should appear in its own little bubble. Look for the green button to be able to send it.

Usually, though, with the Android-based phones that I’ve had, all I’ve needed to do is to simply tap and hold my finger down on the entry in the list of messages and senders, tap the three dots that show up in the upper right corner of the screen and select “Block” from that little list on the context menu. After selecting “Block”, a box will then appear asking if it’s OK to report the message as spam and to block ALL future contact from that number, which will include phone calls if the message is coming from an actual phone number and not from one of those 4 or 5 digit “locations” or “entities”. I put a check mark in the square box for a check mark and then select, I believe, “OK”. The messaging app then takes it from there, both putting the number on the block list on the phone and reporting the message as spam to Verizon.

By the way, I don’t have Verizon service directly with them at all. I have service through a MVNO, or Mobile Virtual Network Operator, that uses Verizon’s system and pays Verizon a fee for being allowed to use their system.

My messaging app doesn’t work that way. Or perhaps it works more than one way, and I know only one of them.

Pressing and holding an individual message (which is what I do for forwarding), doesn’t make the message change color and a new three dot menu doesn’t appear. (Before I press and hold the message, there already is a menu in the upper right, but it’s the standard one, which doesn’t appear to have anything to do with forwarding.) Instead, a pop-up menu appears, giving me options for, in order, Delete, Copy text, Select text, Forward, Share… and 4 others. To forward a text message I tap Forward, and then everything proceeds as described in my first message.

Does this suggest that I need to change a setting somewhere? Or that there’s another procedure I can follow? Or do I just have the wrong app for reporting spam messages? I have the app that came with the phone, Samsung Messages, and it’s apparently the current version.

        Thanks.

          Hi Bob,

Sorry to say, even though my phone is Samsung and came with the Samsung Messages app preinstalled, I don’t use that app. Instead I downloaded and installed Google Messages on both my phone and my desktop. Samsung Messages says that for me to use the Samsung  app, I must make it my default messaging app in place of Google Messages. I hesitate to do that because it might mess up something when I try to return to Google Messages.  I want to return to Google Messages because (1) their web app for desktops/laptops seems far superior to what Samsung offers and (2) it syncs flawlessly with the Android app.

Here is Samsung’s FAQ explaining their Messages app:
          https://www.samsung.com/us/support/answer/ANS00078947/

It discusses blocking spam phone numbers, but it does not mention reporting spam to your carrier.

As you said, Verizon says you should forward the spam message to 7726.  I don’t know why Samsung Messages won’t let you create a chat with 7726.  Have you tried doing that using the “new chat bubble” icon?

I did notice that Verizon recently started recommending Google Messages (which, from my experience, easily allows you to chat with 7726):

Like Paul, my messaging app is also Google Messages updated directly from the Play Store.

On my current phone, it came pre-installed as the default messaging app by the manufacturer, Motorola, and I’ve kept rolling with it win no complaints thus far.

I use Google Messages on both my Android phone (like yours, a Samsung Galaxy) and my desktop computer. My Google Account knows my phone number and therefore my carrier.

      To Block and Report Spam:

On the phone, when a chat (group of one or more messages with a single phone number) is open, touching the three vertical dots in the top right corner brings up a menu. One choice is Block & Report Spam”. Click that and you’ve done what you want.

On my desktop computer, in Google Messages in the left column is a list of your chats. Highlight a chat you want to block and report as spam and click the three vertical dots. On the resulting menu is a choice Block and Report Spam. Click that and you’ve done what you want.

If You Later Want to Unblock a Number:

On the phone, the main messages screen shows a list of your chats. At the top right is a link to my Google Account. (The link is usually the first letter of your surname in a colored circle.) Click on that and one menu choice is Spam and Blocked. Click that and you can unblock a previously blocked number.

On the desktop, at the top of the left column, next to the heading Messages, are three vertical dots. One of the menu items is Spam and Blocked. That will bring up a list of your blocked numbers, with an option to unblock.

      Forwarding:

Google Messages does provide the option to report spam by forwarding the message to 7726 (SPAM). I’ve never done it that way because clicking on “Block and Report Spam” in a menu seems easier. But to try it, in the desktop version of Google Messages I just clicked “Start chat”, entered 7726 as the number, and a new chat was created. I can now forward a message to 7726. I also started a chat with 7726 on my Android phone by clicking on the speech bubble icon (new chat) and then entered 7726 as the number. A new chat with 7726 was created. I can then forward a message to that chat.

You didn’t say which messaging app you are using on your Galaxy A03s phone. My comments above are based on Google Messages.

      Bob99 and Paul,

      Thanks for the replies.

Does the Google messages app have a setting to block *all* text messages from unknown numbers? And without blocking *phone calls* from unknown numbers?

The Samsung app has a setting to block all calls and texts from unknown numbers, but it doesn’t block anything. And I wouldn’t use it even if it did work, because the setting, dysfunctional as it is, doesn’t distinguish between text messages and phone calls.

I’ll quickly switch to the Google app if *both* answers are yes. Otherwise, since it’s served me well, I’m inclined to stick with the Samsung app, at least until I can find a messages app (assuming one exists) that will block messages as described.

And Paul, I wasn’t aware of a new chat bubble icon. I Googled it just now and saw what it was. Not sure that I’ll want to use it, but I’m going to give it a try. Thanks for mentioning it.
