How to repair IE6 (IE6 SP1)

I want to go through repair process for IE6, but can’t seem to find how to do it. I seem to recall it was accessed via the Add/remove programs control panel applet, but it doesn’t show up there. And it’s not on IE Tools menubar. Can someone help? Thanks.

If the command at the command line didn’t fix you:

Steps to Fix IE 6[/i]

I have used it two or three times, and it has worked well. This comes from the Windows XP Resource Kit

1) The repair at Add/Remove:[/i]

Go to Add/Remove>Click Add/Remove>On left Click Add/Remove Windows Components>Highlight Internet Explorer and Check the Box if not already checked>Hit Next and the Repair will run. I know that it will seem strange that IE has a 0.0 MB entry, but that’s normal–I’ve gone over this with MS.

2) If #1 does not repair you then to to the run box by hitting the Windows Key + “r” and typein the run box: “sfc /[irgecacje”[/i] without the quotations. The reason for this is that it makes sure the dllCache folder from which the repair files needed will come has all its files intact and will repopulate it to make sure.

3) Follow this KB: How to Reinstall or Repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows XP.
What happens here and it will show you to do–it’s easy– is that you run “System File Checker
from the command line; follow the regedit–not involved–and then reinstall IE. The repair portion is that SFC examines your protected system files files, and inserts needed files and restores the correct versions by using backups that XP has in the DLLcache folder or files copied from the XP CD.

4) You may not need to do this step, but frequently you do if when you follow the KB, and you have inserted your XP CD Rom, you get a box that says “Incorrect CD” even though it is of course the correct one. It’s a known glitch that happens sometime.[/i]

KB 263499: Prompted for CD-ROM when running System File Checker While Correct CD Rom is in the Drive.
If you need to do this step, and you have XP Home, you will have to install the Group Policy Editor from the CD, but if you have Pro, it is already in your system.

This KB which involved either going to Group Policy Editor through the gpedit.msc executable in the run box or putting it in the MMC as a snap-in and disabling “Restrict CD-Rom Access to Locally logged on user only” works well, but hopefully you won’t even have to use step #4.

When you have fixed IE6, Angie, there is one more simple thing you will want to do that takes a minute if you have not done it. I noticed you have IE6SP1 (either through XP SP1 or you got it as a stand alone update). This is separate and was released recently:
October, 2002, Security Update for Outlook Express, KB 328676. You may have already gotten this from Windows Update.
