How to remove Bee Dictionary?

I am a long-time Firefox (v30.02025269) user and a week ago I downloaded the “Bee Dictionary” to Firefox’ search engines (under Menu). I find this be a very intrusive app for the way I use my computer and I have tried many ways to delete it, including:
• Looked in Firefox’ Extensions and Plug-ins, and it doesn’t appear in either.
• Tried Windows (7, 64 bit) Add/Remove Programs and it didn’t show up there.
• Using Windows Explorer to search my entire C: drive for Bee Dictionary, Bee,
and Dictionary, and only found minor files, which I deleted.
• Googling multiple search terms, including advanced search techniques.
• Sending four emails to the company starting on the day I installed the app, and
receiving no response.

I haven’t tried resetting Firefox as it will take some time to put “back together” and I expect this app will hide from the reset process anyway.

Hopefully, some Lounge member can help me with this.

I am sorry I can not be of help in your present situation but in the future the advice given here quite often is backup. Before trying out a new extension I use FEBE to backup my FF profile.

That BeeDictionary sounds interesting but I am a bit wary after reading the reviews and the web site is less than helpful.

Just because you don't know where you are going doesn't mean any road will get you there.

I cannot be of help either. When Firefox went with their new “Chrome” look I reinstalled FF version 28 which has a “remove” button under the manage search engines options. I am guessing your FF version 30 doesn’t. I have also switched to the Pale Moon browser which looks like the classic Firefox and runs all of the previous add ons that you can’t find for FF version 30 anymore. Pale Moon also has a remove button in the manage search engines options. I don’t use Firefox anymore AND I don’t contribute to Mozilla anymore either!

Have you tried your restore points back to before you installed it ?

The only thing I’ve found about this is how to disable it in https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/quick-dictionary-lookup/

It’s lower down the page in About this Add-on but I don’t know where it means in Firefox and I don’t particularly fancy installing it to find out.

How did it go with the restore points ?

The little icon that shows which search engine is to be used might help. If you click the down arrow right next to that icon, a menu will pop up listing all the search engines. The bottom option is:
“Manage Search Engines…”
If you click “Manage Search Engines” option, yet another pop up window opens which gives many options. Among them are;
Edit
Move up
Move down
Remove
Get more, etc.
Perhaps those options might help.

Hi,

You can usually disable Firefox addons and plugins from the Firefox> Tools> Addons menu.
On the BeeDictionary install page it says ‘Just click on the icon on toolbar to disable the add-on.’

With some rogue/difficult addons you have to manually edit them from your Firefox profile or, for really bad ones, the Windows Registry. Good advice and instructions for both here:

Before you go to that extreme it may be worthwhile using the contacts link on their homepage to ask them for removal advice: http://www.beedictionary.com/

If you manage to zap BeeDictionary I’d recommend trying WordWeb, which installs directly into Windows. WordWeb is very unobtrusive – all you do is press the Control key and RightClick on any word to pop up the dictionary – it works more or less everywhere, not just online.

I have Adblock Plus on the Toolbar in my Firefox and right clicking on that gave me the option to disable, so I guess that could be where you will be able to disable this Bee, if not uninstall it.

I’m using FFv31 and I can vouch that there is still a remove function under the manage search engines options.

You should be able to remove it if it’s there and selectable.

[*]Go to the down arrow in the search box to open your list of engines.
[*]Click on Manage Search Engines.
[*]Select Bee Dictionary.
[*]Click on Remove.

I’m glad you had an answer for KenLauch. Sometimes the most simple solutions are hard for some people to find if they’re not that familiar with their browser options.

The difficult times are when a program you’re familiar with makes a major change, like going from XP to Windows 7 or Firefox 28 to Firefox 29 all the parts are still there (usually) but the programmers might have moved or dressed them up a bit, and that’s enough to throw a person off.

A Forum with friends is a great place to come when you need your memory jogged a bit, but it doesn’t hurt to explore. I’m sure you’ve heard of the expression; When in doubt, cancel out.

So true. Many many times over the years using different browsers and operating systems I have attempted to make changes or tweak the application, and then decided to stop and cancel out.

Then all those OTHER times when I was brave making registry tweaks and such and ended up screwing up my system, I finally figured out what I was doing wrong from my greatest PC teacher and instructor, Professor Mistake!
