Hmmm. Can it really be that there is no option to tell Outlook to print only certain pages of an email? The only options I can find are “all”, “odd”, or “even”. Obviously there are workarounds to solve this (copy and paste desired text into Word, put only one sheet of paper in the printer, etc….) but with all the replies that include entire threads I find it hard to believe that there would not be an option to print selected pages. Am I missing something somewhere?

No, not in native Outlook. Your workarounds are the only way to print selected message text, though you might be able to automate the workaround some by creating an instance of Word for printing, or you might see if Slipstick has something (in a quick look I didn’t see anything germane there).
IMO, Outlooks lack of printing capabilities is one of many Outlook Annoyances.

AskWoody LoungerAugust 31, 2004 at 7:51 pm #870914A slightly quicker workround I use:
Open the message
Edit > Edit Message
Scroll down and insert cursor where replies begin
Shift+Cntrl and press End or left-click and drag to the end
Press Delete
Click on Print
Close message and hopefully remember to click No when asked if I want to save changes….+++++
With practice and if the message is of a fairly consistent type, I find just using the keyboard faster:
Alt_E then E
Page Down x number of times
Up/Down cursor a couple of lines to fine tune the location
Shift + Cntrl and press End
Delete
Cntrl+P then return
Escape then N -

AskWoody LoungerAugust 31, 2004 at 8:08 pm #870933I usually use Edit>Edit Message, File>Print Preview, pick a spot to cut off the print-out, close Print Preview, scroll down, clear away the unwanted stuff (remembering that if “tracking” information has come in, that will be tacked on at print time), print and close without saving.
Another way, which might or might not be better for your workflow, is to print to PDF then print just the first page of PDF. With the product I use (pdfFactory), a temp file is created in the background so I don’t need to go through saving to disk and opening from there, just click the Open button in the pdfFactory buffer window.
Last but not least, with HTML format you do have the option to print selected pages, so you could in theory use Edit>Edit Message, Format>Html, File>Print and choose page 1 only. Because this leads to font changes, among other things, it would not be acceptable for my purposes, but it could be quickest for others. (Note: this works for Plain Text message, but not Rich Text, which cannot be converted directly to HTML.)

AskWoody LoungerAugust 31, 2004 at 8:42 pm #870958All these innovative solutions (we’re trying to kill less trees John, really
) really beg the question why on earth they don’t have this standard (to every other program) option in the print dialog. Do they read this forum (or any other)? I’ve often wondered, as I discover all the annoyances in their (MS) software and wonder who is responsible for all the “improvements”!
Good day!

AskWoody PlusSeptember 1, 2004 at 6:22 am #871109Here’s ineresting. I couldn’t believe this thread as I read it, so I looked around and spotted something for the first time.
If you are in an email and do file>print (ctrl-p) the behaviour is different depending on the format of the message.
If it is html then it provides the “normal” print facilites; that is if you are “in” the document it offers a full print or a page selection print, if you highlight text it adds the ability to “print seection”
If the format is either text or rich text, file>print brings up a dialogue asking for the style you want it printing in, defaulting to memo, and indeed only printing a full message.
Never knew that. I wonder whether a style can be designed that offers parial prints.
In the meantime, if you convert a document to html, you will get what you want!

AskWoody LoungerSeptember 1, 2004 at 10:48 am #871217Well – THAT would explain why I never noticed this odd behavior before (through all this I’ve been wondering “Have I REALLY not printed any of my email in the year since I upgraded to Office 2000? – but I had the problem with all three emails I tried to print yesterday)). And I guess it is one more weirdness of Rich Text (and in my mind one more reason to stick to either HTML or plain text for messages).
Appreciate your pursuit of satisfaction to your curiousity!
