How to Make Win 10 Pro Check for Updates?

I have a quick question about why my Win 10 Pro v1909 won’t check for updates more frequently than every 5 or 6 days? I believe I have the correct settings in group policy as per PKCano, and I do see the newest updates listed in WUSHOWHIDE, but when I check my Windows Update screen, it says things like “Last Checked: 5 days ago” and may or may not list any updates there.

I would like to download and install the Jan 1909 Cumulative update and then set the TRV to 2004 so that I get that after the 1909 Jan updates, but since those don’t show in my WU screen, I haven’t been able to do that. The 1909 Cumulative update has been in WUSHOWHIDE for at least a week or more, but not on the WU screen.

This morning I did download the latest MSRT and KB 4535680 security update, both of which also were in WUSHOWHIDE, but the Cumulative update still wasn’t offered.

Out of some “desperation” I found the group policy setting for frequency and set it to 1 hour – seems that should tell it to check every hour, but so far, it hasn’t.

Anything I should look for or do to speed this up?

Thanks – but does that make it start scanning right away – like the check for updates button – or will it just tell it to stop waiting for days?

And, where do I input that – in the command prompt?

Waste of time. Set TRV and get the latest 2004, which will then update with the latest patches.

If you really want to be sure WU is checking, download WuMgr and use it to check. Same mechanism as WU so you will get the same updates showing.

If you want to move to v2004 or later, See AKB2000016 Section 5 (read this first).
+ Under Windows Update, you will need the “2” (notify download/install).
+ Under Windows Update for Business, set the TargetReleaseVersion as shown in the top screenshot in #2286499 to the version you want.
+ Under Windows Update for Business, set Select when Preview Builds and Feature Updates are received as shown in the second screenshot in #2275043 ****but use the setting of 0 or 1 instead of 365.

Once you have those three GP settings done, go back in the Settings App and in Windows Update\Advanced Settings, set both Quality and Feature deferral pulldown switches to 0. Those pulldown switches will disappear in v2004
Restart the computer and wait for Windows Update to offer you v2004.

Thanks – I will check all of the settings again before I do anything else.

And when I woke the laptop this morning, it had checked for updates and the 1909 Cumulative update for Jan was there, so I installed it. Just seems odd that it doesn’t check very often and 5 or 6 days can go by before the WU queue updates.

I’ll work on the settings and see about 2004.

Not to belabor the GP settings under Windows Update for Business, I have set the TRV to be “2004”. I have not set/enabled the Preview Builds and Feature Updates…” as I missed that along the way.

I was under the impression that “Preview Builds….” did not need to be set/enabled if the TRV was set. No problem setting it to “SemiAnnual Channel” if it needs to be. If this is set, I suppose there would be no problem in getting the 20H2 version if TRV is set to “20H2”.

All of this will probably change again in the 2021 versions.

If you have TRV set, it actually ignores the Feature deferral set to 0 or 1. So you are not using that for deferral. You are using TRV to hold your version.

BUT, if you set Feature deferral to 0 or 1, AND you set the Semi-Annual Channel as shown, you just might not get the Previews you don’t want.

Per your suggestion, I will set “Preview Builds…” to “SemiAnnual Channel” and leave it at “0” deferral days. Maybe that will eliminate some of  the Previews.

I suppose this setting (Preview Builds..) will not interfere with getting the 20H2 version once I set the TRV to “20H2” that we will probably have to get by this fall.

Run in command prompt. It will start right away.

How many hundreds of millions of PCs are hitting the MS servers every day? No wonder they space out the checks.
