Genius.
I set metered connection to “On”, rebooted, then the “Check for updates” screen showed the Retry button.
The updates ran and installed.
One update (KB3156421) showed “failed to install” three times, but KB3163018, which is a newer cumulative update, installed properly, and checking for updates shows that there are no pending updates, so all is probably well.

I also picked up a brand new Dell Inspiron laptop in early May. I found with mine that for some reason it would not update until I got Windows Defender working. Win Defend could not work because of the bloatware that was on the machine. The main offender being the temp version of McAfee. Get rid of the bloatware so you can get Win Defend working again. You may have to do a good software scrubbing to get as much of the remnants out before Win Defender will run. Then follow Woody’s procedure and if you are fortunate like me, you are back in business. Give the machine a chance to get going when that 0% shows. It might take some time. Good Luck!

Sorry Louis. I only had the slow problem that first time after removing the bloatware. My machines are updating in minutes, not hours. Only had one bad experience so far with Win 10 updates, and the Wushowhide tool fixed that problem.

I had a slow Win 10 Pro updating session on the laptop I had on Metered Connection until the June MS-DEFCON 3 here. My tablet, which uses the wushowhide procedure, did not have the issue.

I went to the Microsoft Windows Updates Catalog, and fetched the stand-alone version of the most recent Platform Update for Windows 10 version 1511. This ran through its own installer pretty fast.

After that, MS Updates was just fine (upon coming back from the Platform Update restart).

So it may be that some systems got slowed down because we needed something from the Platform Update. Just speculation here, but that’s what seems to have happened to my laptop.

Had the same problem last week. It was easy to fix. Win 10 has a built in troubleshooter that fixes it. Click start and search for “Troubleshooting”. Select the choice “troubleshooting Control Panel”. When the window opens, under System and Security select “Fix problems with windows update” Click the advanced link, check the box “Apply repairs automatically” then click “run as administrator”. The window will close then quickly reopen. Hit next. It should find and repair the problem. When it finishes try updating.

just wondering if you/anyone know….

what happens to XP license (thus possibly vista and W7) when they stop updating and upgrading?

does that mean its free from XP user license/contract that now the user can install in in multiple computers? like 10 or 100 computers and in different country (like a school/orphanage)?

does anyone has user experience or idea on this?

wondering if its ok to pass the XP or vista CD to some friend children in other 3rd world country?

I actually encountered this problem, back when I was living in Thailand. The short answer is no, licensing terms still apply. If you have “recycled” machines you can re-install whatever software came with the machines. But in general, you’re out of luck.

HOWEVER…. Microsoft is very, very generous in donating Windows (and Office!) licenses to charitable organizations, particularly in the third world. Have your friends contact the Microsoft office in their country. They may need some help putting together a proposal that Microsoft will accept, but I bet you’ll find it’s very straightforward. And in the end you’ll get clean licenses for whatever version of Windows you like.

well you’d know then 3rd world charity is kinda trick… a mom that “adopted” few street kids is that orphanage? getting them a new computer with the lots would be abit over the top and they wont take it since they prob will get rob/kill and become a hot spot for other unfriendly attention.

anyhow its a tricky issue since even in the west, hardware goes faster than the software… the question that has never been answer is how many percent of the hardware changes need to take place to be a new-again computer? you know what I mean? the graphic are improving all the time for gamers and everything is going nano technology… so what then?

well thats the rant then… MORE SERIOUS QUESTION IS the west dump all the “outdated” computers to the east and create a rubbish hell there… and WTF? profit over humanity? how many in the east should die for the west to maintain or continue to “prosper”???? you know?

just curious do they seriously still tracking who uses XP? or win98?

No, Microsoft doesn’t track XP or Win98 users, as far as I know. All of the machines sent from the west have a genuine native operating system – usually identified by a sticker. As long as you install the same operating system, even if the innards have changed, you should be fine.

While computer recycling is an enormous problem, back in Thailand, we used to love it when western companies would dump their old machines on our disadvantaged kids. Better than nothing – which is what they had. Ten year old PCs are still worthwhile!

anyway … about the dump… its one thing to dump the old machine another thing to dump trash…. its been well documented and there are law suits against these company… of course its silence in the west and there is law and above the law special type…

what if the east is “dumping” into the west? do you call those “charitable gifts” better than nothing? toxic or not?

Dumping is a topic frequently followed by the western press. Google “e-waste” or “electronic dumping. ”

I am speaking from the West, but I’ve spent much of my life in the East and the Middle East.

The rules are the same whether you’re using the PCs for charitable organizations or not. I suggest you try approaching Microsoft. You may be very pleasantly surprised. I certainly was.
