A.I is still rudimentary but should you want a view of possible sentient machine futures, you’ll need to turn to science fiction.

A couple of my favorite SF authors have built universes where machines are in charge and in general, humans benefit greatly.

Iain M. Banks (passed) presupposed a post-scarcity reality called the The Culture in 10 novels, which is ruled by sentient “Minds”, where resources and energy are unlimited and therefore money or power mean nothing. Warfare is mostly abolished and what does occur is between lesser races and The Culture machines. People live in huge space ships always on the move between stars, capable of carrying billions, on planets/moons, in artificial orbital’s, etc. This is a hedonistic universe where you can acquire, do or be almost anything you want (even change sexes and give birth).

Neal Asher’s universe is called the Polity and is also ruled by sentient machines. In this universe, the machines took over when we humans created yet another war among ourselves but the machines that were supposed to fight refused and instead took over all government functions.  There is a big honkin Ai in charge of everything and a lot of minor AI’s that help do its bidding.  There are no politicians (surely a good thing!).  AI’s in this universe can go rouge.  The Polity is far rawer than The Culture.  It is a place where money, crime, various bad aliens and regular warfare still exist.

To me, The Culture model seems more likely. Once we can easily get off planet Earth, resources and energy WILL become unlimited (after all, there is a whole universe out there) and robots will be able to build anything for us at no cost. All we will need is some way to shorten travel between stars.

Whether you like it or not, generative artificial intelligence — gen AI — is making its way into Google’s search engine, Gmail, and Docs.

I refuse to use anything Google, the admitted biggest slurper-upper of personal data on the internet, if at all possible.  On another note, does Outlook.com “read” one’s personal email?  After this past Saturday, I must say absolutely.

      Outlook-Invasion-of-Privacy

I am now in the process of re-configuring my account profiles wherever I’ve used my outlook.com address.  Once that is complete, I will delete my outlook.com account.

I’ll deal with Microsoft 365 as those moments present themselves.

Always create a fresh drive image before making system changes/Windows updates; you may need to start over!
We all have our own reasons for doing the things that we do with our systems; we don't need anyone's approval, and we don't all have to do the same things.
We were all once "Average Users".

On another note, does Outlook.com “read” one’s personal email?

Only when configured to do so:

        Outlook-email-events-options

Automatically add events from your email to your calendar

Introduced more than six years: New “Events from email” feature

Only when configured to do so:

Nope.  No configuring necessary: “You don’t have to do anything to allow Outlook to add events from your email.”  I didn’t, and it did.  No thanks.

And nope.  “You can turn events from email on or off and choose which information is added automatically through your Outlook on the web or Outlook.com options. You can’t change your events from email settings in Outlook for Windows, but a link to the Outlook on the web or Outlook.com options page is included in the email you receive the first time an event is created automatically.”  Opt out, not opt in.  I’ll be eliminating any and all Outlook.com email addresses.  I don’t care for this kind of intrusion on my privacy.

Introduced more than six years: New “Events from email” feature

I’ve had Office/Microsoft 365 that long.  Be that as it may, before Saturday, April 1, I had received no such event notices, even though I have had hundreds (at least) of “calendar” events throughout that time.

By getting rid of Outlook.com email, I will rid myself of these unwanted intrusions into my privacy.  That’s the type of configuration upon which I can rely.

An additional option for an email client is included in Windows Essentials 2012 which is deprecated, but not dead. Read to the bottom of the thread for means of acquiring Windows Essentials 2012.

      https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/windows-essentials-2012-microsoft-offline/0dbbd92a-991c-48d7-8157-26decd351da8

Windows Essentials 2012 is a suite of five or six programs, two of which I use continuously:

      • Windows Live Mail 2012
      • Windows Photo Gallery 2012

I’ve researched and experimented with other packages, but have found nothing as comfortable to use in mail client and photographic capabilities as these two programs within Windows Essentials 2012.

I was on Windows 10 prior to updating to Windows 11 — sailed right through all Windows versions.

I can’t say categorically that Windows Live Mail 2012 will work for the latest Windows 10 Cumulative Update, but I can state that it continues to work through the latest Windows 11 Cumulative Update.

The subject was AI’s and search integration.

It should not have been allowed to devolve into email.

On a more direct note, how invasive are the new generative artificial intelligence applications?

What information do they collect when you make an inquiry?

Australian mayor readies world’s first defamation lawsuit over ChatGPT content

A regional Australian mayor said he may sue OpenAI if it does not correct ChatGPT’s false claims that he had served time in prison for bribery, in what would be the first defamation lawsuit against the automated text service.

Brian Hood, who was elected mayor of Hepburn Shire, 120km (75 miles) northwest of Melbourne, last November, became concerned about his reputation when members of the public told him ChatGPT had falsely named him as a guilty party in a foreign bribery scandal involving a subsidiary of the Reserve Bank of Australia in the early 2000s.

“It would potentially be a landmark moment in the sense that it’s applying this defamation law to a new area of artificial intelligence and publication in the IT space,” ..

“He’s an elected official, his reputation is central to his role,” Naughton said. Hood relied on a public record of shining a light on corporate misconduct, “so it makes a difference to him if people in his community are accessing this material”…

If you want to understand how ChatGPT works, here”s a deep dive!
      ——–
What Is ChatGPT Doing … and Why Does It Work?
      February 14, 2023

It’s Just Adding One Word at a Time

That ChatGPT can automatically generate something that reads even superficially like human-written text is remarkable, and unexpected. But how does it do it? And why does it work? My purpose here is to give a rough outline of what’s going on inside ChatGPT—and then to explore why it is that it can do so well in producing what we might consider to be meaningful text. I should say at the outset that I’m going to focus on the big picture of what’s going on—and while I’ll mention some engineering details, I won’t get deeply into them. (And the essence of what I’ll say applies just as well to other current “large language models” [LLMs] as to ChatGPT.)

The first thing to explain is that what ChatGPT is always fundamentally trying to do is to produce a “reasonable continuation” of whatever text it’s got so far, where by “reasonable” we mean “what one might expect someone to write after seeing what people have written on billions of webpages, etc.”
