could someone please tell me how to get a person’s name to show up in the e-mail address line rather than their actual address? when i send e-mails, i get a mixture of names and addresses. i don’t know why or how this has happened. most everyone i write to is in my address book, although i have most of their addresses memorized (not deliberately; that’s just how my brain works shrug ).

when i send out mail to multiple friends, i put my address in the To: line, and put their addresses in the Bcc: line. i have had too many people get my address from the begats that show up when people forward things without cleaning them up first (that’s something else that i do. can’t stand the begats; drives me nuts.), then i get mail from people i have never heard of or don’t know. don’t need it, either.

it just seems to me that there should be some consistency with what shows up in the address box, but i sure can’t find it or figure it out; maybe all y’all can. i’d appreciate any insight here as to how to make it work the way that i want it to, and think that it should.

as usual, thankyou for your help; i really appreciate it. until the next time, take care and God bless.

      Hi, Lady ~

If you are using the Windows Address Book, double-click a contact name > ‘Name’ tab > ‘Display’ field > enter what you would like to see displayed > ‘OK’.

        hello to you, too, bruce!

thanks for the help. i think, though, that i did not ask correctly, as what you answered is not doing what i want. hairout

maybe this example will explain my dilemma better:

when i start to type in a name, the name comes up, and, if they are in my address book, i know that the address is linked to that name; i have tested this a few times, much to the dismay of my long suffering, ever patient friends. when i type in an e-mail address, sometimes, part way through the address, the name associated with that address replaces the address, i.e. i start to type in, let’s say, scrazzle.fra and suddenly, part way through, Jiminy Cricket, the name associated with that e-mail address, pops up. other times, i can type in the entire e-mail address and that’s all that is there, no name, even when the name and address are in the address book. there doesn’t seem to be any rhyme or reason to this, either. scratch

i hope that i have explained it better; i can’t think of any other way to ‘splain it. once again, thankyou for your help; it’s always appreciated, even when, or maybe i should say in spite of the fact that, i don’t always understand it. until the next time (no, not a threat, simply a statement of fact!), take care and God bless.

          Hi, Lady ~

Actually, what I was talking about is exactly what you are encountering. Please see the screenshot below.

The reason you can type in an e-mail address, sometimes part way through the address, the name associated with that address replaces the address is because there exists that name in the ‘Display’ field. Other times, you can type in the entire e-mail address and that’s all that is there, no name, even when the name and address are in the address book because the ‘Display’ field is blank.

If the ‘Display’ field is empty, you will get only the e-mail address of the person in your address book. If the ‘Dsiplay’ is not empty, you will get what value is in that ‘Display’ field, regardless of whether you type in the name or address with which that is associated automatically once you begin typing and it begins recognizing the data.

            hello bruce!

okay, i am glad that you understand what i am asking. i just went into my address book, and picked out a person that i know has both name and e-mail address listed, and that has an entry in the Display field. i opened a new e-mail screen, and started to type her e-mail address in. the auto-fill (don’t know if that is the right name for it, but that’s what it does) finished up her e-mail address, but no name. i then tried it again, using her name, and the name came up. i then added your name and address just so i could try one that i haven’t used before; as soon as i started to type your e-mail address, your name popped right up. i don’t know if i am asking the right thing, or what, but i guess i am just going to have to go with whatever pops up. it’s just strange that there seems to be no consistency.

thankyou ever so much for helping me. i’m sorry that my computer is so dense that it doesn’t understand perfectly simple directions. sigh take care and God bless.
