Our church as a network whose Public IP Address I know. We have a smart thermostat with internal IP address 192.168.1.10 which I can reach from a computer on the network. Is it possible to find the Public IP address for that thermostat so I can reach it from home with the above information (Public IP address of network and internal IP address)?

Patch reliability is unclear. Unless you have an immediate, pressing need to install a specific patch, don't do it. |

AskWoody MVPFebruary 26, 2017 at 2:23 am #1591875It probably doesn’t have one – internal devices do not have public IP addresses without special set up.
Having external access to an internal resource is inviting hackers to attack your system, so you need a good reason to want external access.
Why do you want external access?
Is there any security for the smart thermostat?
Do you have any remote access to your internal system?cheers, Paul

AskWoody_MVPFebruary 26, 2017 at 2:56 am #1591877You could find the public=external=WAN address of your church’s network using one of the multitude of “What Is My IP Address” websites, such as https://www.whatismyip.com/ from a browser running on a PC on the church network.
But, as PaulT says, that’s about your limit unless you can access remotely a PC on the church network, which would then enable you to get to the thermometer.
Bit of a faff, as we would say in the UK?

InactiveFebruary 26, 2017 at 12:58 pm #1591941Thanks Jerry. It looks like we will have to do as you suggested (it is not a Nest thermostat). There are smart thermostats spread out over four buildings and one poor soul sets them when there are special meeting (regular meetings are programmed into the thermostats). No doubt the vendor will provide the app. I was involved because I was asked to run Cat5 cable to the thermostat to replace an incorrect installation. I could check the setup from a computer in the church office knowing the internal IP address (192.168. etc) and was just curious. (Fortunately the cable works.)
Thanks to other other respondents. Apparently I didn’t explain adequately since your replies probably make sense; just not relevant. For example, I said I know the public IP address of the router; just don’t know how to go from there to the device.
