I would like to add a lot more 1920×1080 display space (multiple windows) by using a 4K (3840×2160 ) monitor.

I have seen some TVs at Costco that can do this for television but is it possible with a PC and a monitor?

Right now, this is a future wish for a white box PC that I would build.

I am imagining a special video card with four identical HDMI or Displayport outputs.

If that can be done, how about a white box PC with two or more special video cards for 8/12/… concurrent 1920×1080 displays.

    Very truly yours,

    Jonathan

Maybe it’s my lack of knowledge but I’m a little confused by your question. Many video cards currently have four displayport connections, in order to run up to four monitors simultaneously. What would keep your 4K monitor from displaying four windows like any other Windows monitor?

One monitor = one output port. From there you can split your screen with Snap Assist.

… and what was the name of that tool again that let you define multiple virtual screens on a single physical screen? So if an application insists on using “full screen” mode it just fills that one virtual monitor…

Hm, iShadow VDM seems to be one (evaluation or purchase) but ISTR that one such tool came bundled with some display models too.

As for physical connectors, well, offhand I just remember those that split a 4k display vertically into two, and that was mostly for use with two DVI links that were reintegrated into a single logical screen in the computer anyway. Because DVI bandwidth wasn’t enough for direct 4k on a single line…
