• How to delete an attachment??

I needed to delete a screenshot attached to a post in order to change it. When I click on Edit, I can see a list of the “Current Attachments” but there is no evident way to remove them.

    How to do it?

It is not a functionality available in BBPress (although some mod’s have access to some tools). Trashing the post is one option, or a sing-out for moderator help.

I wish Trash will be back and the ability to delete attachments.

I doubt that will happen, breaking the forum nesting is time consuming to fix. Having a preview button prior to publishing would be good but it all costs $$

More than a year ago, if memory serves, it used to be possible to trash postings already published: there was a button for that called “TRASH” next to “REPLY” and “REPORT” on the top right corner in the grey bar just above the comment. It could only be used by the author. I am not sure why that is a problem now, but removing just an attachment might be easier, as that is not going to change the ‘nesting structure’ mentioned here in a previous comment by Microfix.

By the way, if the issue is preserving the successive replies’ nested structure when deleting a comment, as part of the process to scrape it (if initiated, as used to be possible in the past, by the person posting it) the deleted comment could be replaced automatically with a one-line entry: “Comment deleted by author.”

As it is now, one can still delete a comment, but only before submitting it, as there is a button right next to “submit” for that purpose. But this button is only there until the comment is submitted for the first time. Afterwards and even if one is still in the time-window for editing the comment, the button is no longer there. That makes sense, as long as there is no practical alternative to someone at AskWoody then coming  to delete a comment by hand, at the author’s request. Might I have just suggested a practical alternative that also might save some people some extra work?

One other possibility, if probably messy one because of messily imperfect human nature, might be for the repenting author, while this is soon enough after submitting to be still possible, to click “EDIT”, select all of the comment and then click “Delete” in the keyboard, living a blank comment space behind and then typing there: “Comment deleted by author.” I suspect this is a bad idea.

Until a very recent software update, only Da Boss had the tools to deal with attachments – not even MVPs could. We now have a few more tools in the toolkit, but that doesn’t extend all the way down the line.

Your options don’t have a logical use sorry, and I don’t have time to explain right now. needless to say, we’re doing our best. As always.

I, a plain foot lounger, way before I got my golden cockade, have used that “TRASH” button a few times, when it was still available, many moons ago. Now “AskWoody” runs on a different platform provided by WordPress, I believe, that, apparently, is also a very inflexible and complex one. Or very costly to get modified even in little ways. (Among other things, I do write software, so I might have some idea, maybe.)

And thanks Kirsty and the rest of the MVPs for helping us out with the problems the platform presents us with, by sheer use of their hands and time.

Incorrect. We have not changed the platform since the Lounge was created, 3.5 years ago, although a lot of settings have needed to be tweaked, as we have discovered how some Loungers misused the options, which created nightmares for the site structure – and a lot of extra work for our very hard-working volunteers!

This will work great if what the poster wants to obliterate is the text of the post, but unfortunately it doesn’t help if what the user wants to delete is an attachment to said post.  🙁

Attachments that are not set into content are not visible to those not logged into the Lounge. By deleting the text that inserts it into content, it will not ‘show’. While this is not a zero chance of being seen, it prevents that information from being ‘harvested’ by bots. The response time by mods is quite good, and will further minimize the chance of problems.

Personally, I save screen shots/photos into a folder, and review and delete all information, including EXIF data, before uploading to any site. Its better to be safe, than sorry…
