An alarming story in WWW regarding Microsoft taking liberties with users’ registration info on hotmail accounts. I don’t believe I have an account, but I’d like to be sure. Is there some way I can confirm that I in fact do not have one? For somewhat self-apparent / somewhat paranoid reasons I’m hesitant to go to Microsoft for help…

    TIA.

If you’ve never signed up for a .NET passport or visited Hotmail’s website, then you don’t need to worry about it.

What’s been happening is that Microsoft is making checkboxes appear where they weren’t before, and *allegedly* these options were there from the word go. Maybe, maybe not, but people are seeing the option to share or not share their information, and the checkboxes are filled in to indicate that it’s peachy to share your Hotmail information with the world until you check them off.

My question is, who really uses Hotmail for their real email address anyway? Too much spam for me!

Thanks, Mark, for your quick reply. My post was lacking in that I did not indicate that I had done the minimum leg work myself (i.e. I did read the article). My concern is that I have signed up for Yahoo and Deja/Google mail accounts for various reasons in the past, and while I don’t believe I ever signed up with MSN, I can’t be too sure.

I suppose what my question boils down to is this — is there a way to anonymously check if a particular email exists in the Passport database?

        Thanks again.

Only IF you know what account name you would have used and then you would need the password that goes with it.

          Just a thought – you could check for “cookie”(s) from Passport.com and Hotmail.com [Msn.com ].

Of course if you clean/delete cookies then it won’t mean anything, but if you don’t… ?

Any idea which web site has the most ‘hits’ in any given day?

The way you get thrown straight into it after signing out of Hotmail, my money’s on MSN.
