How stable is Word2002? (Word 2002)

I’m nearing the end of a document-management application, which opens, closes and amends Word documents. In their infinite wisdom, my company have only just upgraded me from Word 2000 to 2002 (which will be the shipped version). It all runs fine, but Word intermittently crashes either on opening or closing documents from Visual Basic 6. The Word 2002 error message doesn’t give me any clue: ‘Microsoft Word has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience’ (- oh that’s OK then!). Word then closes. It also messes things up for me when it immediately tries to recover and re-open the document, but that for the moment is a separate issue.

Does anyone know if 2002 is inherently unstable, or if this is a known problem, l’ve done a few searches but haven’t found anything.

I do not consider anything that contains the Registration/Activation Wizard to be classified as stable.

Regardless what Legare Coleman has to say, the Word XP (2002) is as stable as any product out there. That said your thoughts and mine are different, please define and/or list concerns.

As for the activation, it has worked on ALL of may machines with out a problem. Legare Coleman would NOT know for he has NEVER installed any of these products,. So all he knows about this, is the war stories he has heard from those few that have had problems that they them selfs have created.

I also found that stability was affected by operating system.
If you’re on Windows XP – great. Millenium Edition is a recipe for these kinds of errors.

Word 2002 is very stable.

I only run into problems such as yours:

1. Due to 3rd party apps such as Acrobat’s PDFWriter misbehaving, but that occurred with earlier versions of Word too.
2. I do a lot of complex VBA programming, sometimes I blow things up, but then that too occurred in earlier versions of Word.

Overall, I’d say that Word 2002 is stable.

a. Make sure any 3rd party apps that interact with Word are, at least, alleged to be Word 2002 compatible.
b. If you use Norton Auntie Virus, disable the NAV Office plug-in, but do NOT disable NAV’s AutoProtect.
c. If you have the full Acrobat product, use the trick I describe in http://www.standards.com/OhMyWord/VBABugsFeatures.html%5B/url%5D to reduce the bad behavior of PDFWriter.
d. Make sure you have Office XP SP 1 installed. I just received SP 2 today, so won’t say anything about that yet.

Hi,
The Registration/Activation wizard hasn’t been a problem at all, l’m not sure why Legare mentioned it, but l’d be interested in his reasons if he’d like to expand on his rather cryptic comment(!)
I’m running Windows 2000 rather than XP, though l believe our customers will be running Windows 98, 2000 or XP, and may have either Word 2000 or 2002. I’m only using Word in the context of this application l’m writing, so l don’t know if Word2002 is in itself prone to crashing in everyday use, or if it’s down to my code.
