I have been using one drive and personal vault for a while.  I was researching security of the service online – just two articles here:

    https://www.cloudwards.net/onedrive-security/

    https://www.cloudwards.net/what-exactly-is-zero-knowledge-in-the-cloud-and-how-does-it-work/

What do you think? How secure is One Drive? Personal vault? Does anyone use Boxcryptor or similar software for extra protection?  I am not so concerned about the government accessing my data as much as I am the potential for an MS employee to or a serious data breach of MS allowing access to my one drive and/or personal vault data.

    note – I use 2FA & have a strong password (I use a pw vault)

    Thanks and Happy New Year!!

The first article tells you everything you need to know – your data is not secure unless you use zero knowledge encryption.

If you want to store your data in the cloud and need / want security, OneDrive is not the answer.

Thank you.  I put files on OneDrive I do not consider sensitive – recipes, exercises, manuals, etc.  I don’t want anyone to access them, but if they did it would be ok. Anything I want to keep private I put in personal vault or on my hard drive.  And I will research software like Boxcrytor.

Just use Veracrypt on your machine and store everything local.

Yes but, I like having remote access to certain files.  Putting them in the cloud poses a security risk – encryption should eliminate that risk, I hope! Thanks for your advice – I need to do a little more research into the options.

Closed VeraCrypt container files can be synced to the cloud.

Simultaneous sync and open of the container is known to cause problems, so either copy it elsewhere before opening a synced container, or turn off syncing (or be offline) while having the container open.

Or Bitlocker if you have Windows Pro.

Create a TeamDrive (synqion.com in the USA) account – free for personal use – and use a web browser to access your files remotely.

      cheers, Paul
