How many items can be pinned to taskbar icons?

I was recently using Excel 2013 in Win 10 Home 1909 and pinned three files to the Excel taskbar icon.  A little later, after also pinning two items to Word, I needed to return to one of the pinned Exel files, but it was no longer pinned!

Is there a maximum you can pin?  How can this be increased?

Ah!  I’ve just discovered that the list of pinned files scrolls.  There are six items in my list, not two!

However:

1/  Can the scrolling be stopped, i.e. just get the full list?

2/ Is there a maximum that can be pinned, and how to increase it?
