I have a cupboard in my kitchen where I put my full, pre-fridge pepsi cans. The cupboard is 250 mm wide and 230mm high (internal measurements). I pepsi can is 67mm in diameter (as close as I can measure by hand) or 210 mm in circumference (using a bit of string) [which gives 68mm so lets settle on 67mm as the measurements]. How many pepsi cans can I fit into my cupboard assuming that I lie them down (ie round top facing forwards) and I only have room for a depth of 1 can?

This isn’t the same puzzle as putting in coke cans because I always ask for pepsi – most places say “yes we have pepsi” at which point I say “no, not coke – pepsi”. They reply “oh, it is coke” and I say “water please”. I’m working on the basis that if I do this enough they will start to realize that there is a market for pepsi.

I use to do the same thing at MacDonalds – ask for a caramel thickshake (secondary puzzle – what are their 3 standard flavours and do they have caramel in the restaurant ?). One day they actually said – “yes sir” – they were running a special and caramel thickshakes were one of the specials [consumer power at works]

If you wish to keep your cans in one piece and full of Pepsi (which I’m assuming you do), then:

      a) 9, with some space?
vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry. They *do* have caramel, however it’s not for milkshakes, it’s for ice cream…they’ve usually got a stand with 3 sundae toppings (choclolate, caramel, and strawberries)

correct on the assumption and maccy D items but everyone is incorrect on the can count. Update – just checked the measurements and cupboard is correct but can diameter is 65mm.

Is your answer 11 cans? The attached diagram shows how 11 can be placed in the cupboard but it will be a very tight squeeze and may result in some minor deformation of the cans that could occur in real life.

          That was rather irritating….

In the time I came back I got 11 too

          No, take my last back

          I make 12

that was the answer that I have 12 but with a different diagram. I must try your diagram and see how it goes. The one shown has the advantage of being stable after I move a few cans into the fridge.

Funnily enough I had that picture at one point, I just felt that there was a lot of space up in the top left corner so went on to create my rather unstable attempt. Still nice puzzle, I just wish I had enough room in my kitchen specifically designed for holding just Pepsi. evilgrin

We just had a new cupboard put in and, you know how it goes, first in best dressed! I just have to be careful to have a stock of cans ALWAYS in there – I expect that if it ever gets empty I will lose it.
