“How hot is too hot”? you ask. You’re in Cali, we are in the northern part of the state. Fires, when one is 75 percent contained another pops up on the app, leaving behind a serious burn on the steep terrain with many displaced residents. That’s hot. The swamp cooler is more like a fan blowing out warm air. The devices are well protected and not used in this heat, except the iPhone of course. Kept safely out of direct sun and any outside rest stop, like a table or whatever. Have not seen this much heat in a long stretch for many years, and I’m a Cali original, SoCal and everything in between. The scorching temps fuel the fires and when an Evac Order comes through, kids, elderly, animals, then devices. The North Pole is looking good these days.

I have 4 battery backups that create a lot of beeping.  Forida not having the extreme heat as southern Cali., and my tech devices are ok, but power outs are hard on the two low tech devices everyone has, the Refrigerator and Air Conditioner.  It’s especially hard if the power makes a couple of false starts and stops.  I’ll shut off the breaker switches to them both.  If the outage drags on I’ve got a couple of big Lith-ion batteries that will run the fridge for about 30 hours and a good size battery job site type fan that will run for 24 hours.

Since May 2024, a severe and long heat wave has impacted India. The heat wave occurred during the Indian dry season, which typically lasts from March to July with peak temperatures in April and May Rajasthan’s Churu recorded 50.5 °C (122.9 °F) highest temperature in India in last eight years.

30C is our Winter in the Day 🙂

Then there is the other extreme.

There was a time when I worked outside, all day, in the north – Canada, Finland, & Sweden.

It was not unusual for the high for the day reaching -30 degrees Fahrenheit (-34 Celsius).

It was not unusual for there to be a perfectly blue sky – free of clouds – while at the same time a gentle snow fall.

And the snow sounded like crystals bells as it fell to the earth.

You can dress for the cold but there is a limit to what you can takeoff to protect yourself from the heat.

Ok, that is REAL hot.  We are having our own heat wave up here in the pacific northwest.  92-94.  Nothing like you though.  I prepare by moving all my batteries inside.  But forgot my AA batteries in the garage and many of them oozed away.

Even up hear we were notified this year that there could be a possibility of rolling outages if we overdo the power consumption.

We gave up a few years ago and put in a generator.

      Cheers!!

A long, long time ago, I worked at a community college.  Summer came and it got hot, into the 90s.  The A/C  stopped working because of poor or non-existent maintenance.  We had Commodore PETs and SuperPETs  at the time.  The computer lab had small windows but at first it wasn’t too bad.  I complained to my supervisor, who only laughed and said it was cool where he was (20 miles away).  They brought in a couple of floor fans which alleviated things a bit, but one day I went to lunch, and when I came back, the fans were gone, given to a secretary.

It was so close in the lab, and the temperature increased. The PETs had no fans, and I noticed strange characters on the screens of some of the computers, and others just hung.

I informed my supervisor of the situation, and he called the head supervisor, who called the maintenance manager.  A/C returned in two days.  Then the outside temperature cooled.  The PETs returned to normal.

The maintenance manager had also got calls from other departments/faculties.  He was fired later for this and other transgressions.

Phones also do not like it cold. We lost power for 8 days after Sandy hit.  I would charge my and my wife’s phone in my work van overnight. by the time power was back, it was 56 degrees in the house. The last 2 mornings, i came out to get the phone and it showed a low temp alarm.

In The Netherlands, everything above 25C / 77F is considered ‘hot’. We’ve been spoiled for the lats 5-6 years with hot, dry and long summers. This year the summer is more as described in the geography books – cool and wet. A little too wet, actually. And a little too cool as well – it’s only 19C / 66F at the moment.

Be cautious about leaving lithium ion batteries, or equipment with such batteries embedded, in a hot car.  A few years back, a photo of a car with an incinerated dashboard circulated — the owner had left his cell phone in its dash mount while at work.  The location was Ridgecrest, California.  July and August daytime temperatures there commonly exceed 100 F / 38 C.

This morning was the first time this month that we could open all the windows and air out the apartment here in Bethesda, MD.  Temps at 7 AM was 70F!!!  Otherwise, it’s been pretty awful with just hot and humid air.  We are also in a bit of a mini-draught.

With the heat and humidity indexes in the mid to upper 100’s in the mid Atlantic to New England states, it has been extremely oppressive, dangerous, and even deadly.  The mini-draught is welcome because the grass doesn’t grow much and I don’t have to cut it.

Yes, our friends in the greater Philadelphia region are experiencing a mini-drought and their grass is not growing much and they don’t have to cut it as often.

However, the weeds and vines in their yard are out of control while at the same time their local municipality has requested that they cut their water consumption by 5% and reframe from watering their grass and gardens in order to protect the integrity of their water distribution system.
