I have a Galaxy A03s, though I’m sure that the model doesn’t matter.

I installed an app that mutes all calls from numbers that aren’t in my contacts, I figure that if the call isn’t spam, the caller will leave a voice mail.

Yesterday, looking at my recent missed calls, I saw that there was one from “U.S. Bank Branch,” which isn’t in my contacts and is an outfit that I’ve never done business with. They also left a voice mail message, simply asking me to call. So it was basically spam. (I Googled the name and number. Not a heck of a lot of links appears, but it seems to be a business that actually exists.)

My question is: how did my phone “know” to show the name of the caller, as well as the number? It seems odd that an unknown caller can do something to cause his name to appear on my phone. If I hadn’t had a muting app installed, it’s possible that I would have answered, assuming that the caller was one of my contacts whose name I had forgotten. I also see the potential for abuse. For example, a scammer could cause the phone to show something formidable, such as the IRS or the local police department. Or, after some background checking, the caller could make it show the name of a family member.

Can anyone explain how a caller can cause his name to appear on the receiver’s phone?

    Thanks.

In the settings for my iPhone, there is a choice to:
Share Name and Photo (On/Off) If the other person has this on, I may see their name/photo.
Business Call Identification (On/Off) If I have this on, I may see their business name/number.

      Check your phone settings.

Just checked, and it’s not clear whether I have such a setting.

There are only two things in my phone settings: “Show contacts’ phone numbers” and “Show extra details: Show when you last talked, important dates, and more.” The first obviously doesn’t apply. The second doesn’t explain the “and more,” so I’ve turned it off and will see how that goes. If I find that I miss whatever it does or that disabling it doesn’t suppress the names of unknown callers, I can always turn it back on.

        Thanks for the advice.

Maybe using CNAM (Caller ID Name) service

“CNAM, which stands for Caller ID Name, is a feature in the United States and parts of Canada that displays the name associated with a phone number when receiving a call25. This technology allows for more informative caller identification, helping recipients decide whether to answer a call or not.”

Or, after some background checking, the caller could make it show the name of a family member.

That is called SIM swap fraud and is a knows ongoing scam

Googling tells me that my carrier used CNAM. So that answers that.

I’d heard of SIM swap fraud, but didn’t realize that it could apply in this particular context.

        Thanks.
