I set up dual boot between windows xp and windows 8. Windows 8 is the default o/s. I would like to reboot using remote desktop from windows 8 to xp. The option to restart is not available in the charms/settings/change pc settings/general when using remote desktop. Also, ‘shutdown /r /o /f /t 00’ gets an error. Does anybody know how to accomplish this?

AskWoody LoungerJanuary 15, 2013 at 11:12 am #1368463I understand that the boot prompt is prior to loading the o/s but if you are logged in to windows 8 at the desktop as opposed to remote desktop, you have an option to restart and choose the alternate o/s prior to shutting down windows 8. It just looks like you should have the same functionality with remote desktop. I believe in windows xp, it defaulted to denying restart/shutdown using remote desktop but you could alter the options to allow it.

AskWoody LoungerJanuary 15, 2013 at 4:25 pm #1368540I don’t understand the part about choosing the alternate OS prior to reboot unless that is the default or the boot order is manipulated before restart, but try your switches with a dash instead of a slash. for example, shutdown -r
The lock screen seems to best represent the windows security screen in Windows 7, where one could easily choose restart or shutdown, and XP could be managed remotely via the Task Manager, but so far I don’t see any other way in 8 except by command line or maybe command line script shortcut.

That is the default behavior of the Windows 8 bootmgr when dual booting. That’s why I use the Windows 7 bootmgr for my dual boot with Windows 7/8.
I can go directly to either OS without the reboot in between.
