How do I stop the “Set Up Windows Internet Explorer 8” pop-up???

I’ve been a happy Windows user since version 3.0. I like Windows. But now I’ve gone and downloaded IE8. After downloading it, I responded to the selections presented in the “Set Up Windows IE8 pop-up window. I manage six user accounts, so I’ve become pretty familiar with it. But I don’t have time to delve in deeply and learn how to use all these features right now. They may be great features; we are just too busy. So I just want to know one simple thing. HOW DO I GET IE 8 TO STOP INCESSANTLY INTERUPTING ME WITH THE “SET UP WINDOWS IE 8” POP-UP? I thought the original idea of personal computing was that we were supposed to be able to tell the computer what to do; not that the computer should tell us when we need to learn about a particular feature. If I don’t hear about how to stop this pretty soon (and I have searched), I’m going to uninstall IE 8.

We generally recommend NOT posting your personal email address here because it may be harvested for sending spam.

As for IE8, I’m not sure why you keep getting that prompt. Other than choosing your default search service, does it promote other features?

What version of Windows do you run, and do you have administrator privileges?

Edit: I found a site that lists all the dialogs. It looks like a 30 second process to blow through the wizard. Here are my suggestions for a quick run-through:

Suggested Sites: No
Search Provider: Keep (the one migrated from IE7)
Update Search Provider: No
Accelerators: Keep
URL Filter: if you do not have any other filter, Yes; otherwise, or if privacy is more important, No
Compatibility: No updates

You can change these settings later using the regular dialogs.

The only setting I’d disagree with from the start is Compatability Updates. Compatability mode is invoked automatically for a group of sites that do not render properly in IE8. Periodically Microsoft updates the compatability list. I think it is a good thing to update the list.

Thanks for the tip on e-mail address. I generally went with the same choices you recommended, including Compatibility Updates as Joe suggested, but I rejected the accelerators. Basic premise was to wait and see what the community reports on how this all works before implementing all of it.

The real issue is, for some reason, it keeps presenting the same initial pop-up. FYI, We run XP SP3 on all our systems. Initial update was done under an administrative account on all systems, and I went through the selections on that administrative account after reboot. On PCs with multiple user accounts, each account must initialize IE8 separately the first time IE is opened after install and the same Set Up window opens and calls for all the same choices. Some of the users I provide support for have asked why they keep receiving the pop-up. I just tell them to click on the red X and it will go away. This appears to be either i. a bug; or ii. Microsoft repeatedly saying “come on, are you really sure you don’t want this good stuff” over and over again.

The initial screen with the options is per user. So, each user should see that once. Are you saying that after setting the options that users are seeing the initial screen again?

I think this is standard until one makes the selections. If one cancels out the run once wizard has not been completely run, so it will start up again when IE is started.

I accidentally installed IE8 on one of my computers, and I now have to deal with this same pop up. It wants me to take advantage of all these really cool things which I don’t want. Clicking it just takes me to the Microsoft site where it explains all these wonderful things. There seems to be no way to stop this thing from popping up. I hate it. I have found no way to stop it.

All I’ve ever had to do was make the selections once. I don’t remember what the options are to tell IE that you’ve done that.

You may have to uninstall IE8 and then download it from MS download center and install rather than from the “regular” update site.
