How can you get FOLDERS to open in the size, shape & detail as they were on closing them ? There was a fix in Vista called Mats_Run.winfilefolder.exe but this not available for Win 8.1

AskWoody_MVPJune 23, 2014 at 5:24 pm #1457448Have you tried using the Tools, Folder Options in File Explorer [Windows Explorer in earlier versions of Windows]? First set a Folder as you desire, do the preceeding and then click the View tab and click the button labeled Apply to Folders.
Also, it may help the window size by holding down the Ctrl key while closing. Have seen it take a couple of times to ‘train’ Windows.
Before you wonder "Am I doing things right," ask "Am I doing the right things?" -

Hi Berton
Yes I have tried these idea’s! Now and before in Vista 64 and they sometimes worked, but no joy in Win 8.1 it’s a pity that Mats_Run.winfilefolder.exe will not install into this version of windows. I have used windows going back to win3.1 and every version since then (except win 7) .I have never had so many problems to overcome since the early days of computers, It’s making me think seriously of buying Windows Vista Ultimate edition !!!! :huh:Regards Gray

AskWoody LoungerJune 24, 2014 at 3:41 am #1457491My experience is a bit different, used Windows 3.1 back in 1992 but skipped over Windows ME.
A problem with Vista is with computer too new and will not have suitable drivers.
Yes that’s the only thing holding me back from going back to Vista…will my new computer work with Vista, looks like I will just have to hope that MS get their finger out and do a little more for the Desktop customers ?

AskWoody LoungerJuly 17, 2014 at 11:07 pm #1459888I use a program called “ShellFolderFix” which does what you appear to be asking for.
It can be found here: http://www.sevenforums.com/free-developer-programs-projects/40916-shellfolderfix-manage-folder-window-positions-size.html
(In the forum it says it’s for Windows 7, but also works in Windows 8 & 8.1 – note that there are 32 and 64-bit versions.)

I tried “ShellFolderFix” 64bit and it worked a treat, many thanksLife is worth living again. But I have to ask myself … why in hells name can’t MS send out a fix, if you work with many files open on two or three screens it’s time consuming to say the least
Great big thanks again……………………Regard Gray

AskWoody LoungerJuly 21, 2014 at 5:55 am #1460126Windows can do this (I can’t recall the exact fix – but I was using the “Ctrl” key to fix it with IE a long time ago)
The issue here is that others can adjust this behavior – and if a developer changes this for their program, then they have to adjust it only for their program – not for all programs.
The ShellFolderFix is a good program that resets these values.
