I see Windows has a utility to burn an ISO to a disk, and I use Alex Feinman’s ISO recorder 3.1 to create new ISO files. So far I have not found a way to mount an image. Anyone got a utility, or have I missed one in Windows?

I have been using Virtual Clone Drive available at slysoft.com. I like Daemon Tools (at filehippo) better, but it is not ready for Windows 7 yet, IMO. Both are free.

Thanks, I’ll take a look at slysoft, though I was hoping for freeware. I’ve heard more than once that daemon had an adware (or some kind of malware) problem.

I use Slysoft Virtual Clone drive. It is free and has yet to fail me.

I went to their site and got the impression it had to be registered in a month. Will it still work after that period?

No, the program is totally free. I use this program also and it works great.

A quote from their website: “Virtual CloneDrive is freeware, you may use it at no cost.”

Daemon Tools Lite works just fine in my Windows 7 Home Premium.

Daemon Tools Lite works just fine in my Windows 7 Home Premium.

Interesting, my configuration had problems with Daemon, messed up my screen and would not uninstall. Same thing with Online Armor, which just totally screwed up my new install. Good thing I followed Fred Langa’s “reload apps” article, I had images at every major install point so recovery was not a problem. A number of the articles in this forum section seem to indicate that while Windows 7 is very solid upon release (versus Vista) there are still incompatibilities, both hardware and software. I will have to check out the Daemon forum to see if my problem is common. Maybe it was a part of the Online Armor problem, I do not remember if they were at a common point.

Make sure you have the most recent News :: DAEMON-Tools.cc. It is the version compatible with Windows 7.

            Hi,

Yup, I had the latest version off of filehippo. It may have had something to do with the default ATI drivers that were loaded upon install of Windows 7. I’ve been looking at the Daemon forums and there is some mention of problems with Gigabyte motherboards and some of the ATI drivers. I have not tried Daemon since I installed the latest ATI drivers and so it is worth another try. Virtual Clone Drive is OK, but I am just used to Daemon tools and like it better.

            @Larry
, I have also used ImgBurn and Pgcedit with success with Win7, although PgcEdit is having problems finding ImgBurn and so have to run both programs separately. Probably fixable, but I have not looked hard as I have only bound one ISO and burned one disk to test the functionality.

        Me too with W7x64.
The product is actually named MagicDisc and it’s from MagicISO.

Another nod for MagicDisk on Win7Ult/x64. CDBurnerXP also works fine in Win7Ult/x64.

Try the deamon tools lite it works like a charme in 32 and 64 Bits.

Also worth mentioning is that iso files can be opened with applications like 7-Zip and IZarc and any content extracted. Also, if your iso is a DVD movie, programs like VLC can play the movie directly from the iso file without having to mount it.

I use Daemon tools. What are you trying to accomplish though? At times I also (at a slower speed), copy all contents of the ISO opened in 7-Zip to a USB flash drive. Reason I do this is for some netbooks that I deal with which do not have optical drives and installing Daemon tools is not permitted by the customer. It works like a charm! I can install and in most cases the program is happy. This of course, would not work if the program is a game and has copy protection in which only way Daemon tools or Alcohol 120% would be one of the few ways to keep the protection technology in place (remember, backup purposes only for this kind of stuff).

Thanks for all the replies, this place is really lighting up.

As for what I’m trying to do, Timothy, I am only tinkering. This is my home desktop computer and I use it for writing, banking, music and movies. Mostly I just play with it; tuning, experimenting, etc., sort of like if I still had a hotrod in the garage, but the computer is cheaper and draws less blood. As for mounting an ISO, I probably would only watch a movie or something. It’s just something I wanted to be able to do more than something I needed to do. So compared to you IT people, I’m just an amateur tinkerer.

I use Virtual Clone Drive and ImgBurn. Both are free and work great with Windows 7. No problems at all.

I have been using the “FileDisk ISO Mounter” Shell Extension (FileDisk ISO Mounter.url) since XPx32, and it appears to work fine on W7x32.

I just now downloaded Virtual Clone Drive and will try it out tonight. I’m glad one of my first threads was interest-worthy.

Give Alcohol 52% a try. It works well in Windows Vista & 7. Here is the link to get it,

      I hope this helps.

I installed Virtual Clonedrive; nice and simple program. I used Autoruns to stop the processes from running at boot, since I won’t be using it every day. I looked at alcohol, but it had more than I needed including a toolbar that some say is spyware. Alcohol says it’s not.

    • #1191629

I also use Daemon Tools Lite in Win 7 x64 Pro. Ive tried Alcohol 120%, but that just crashed to a BSOD. DTL runs perfect with no hiccups what so ever.

    • #1191810

You can always try the free version from Alcohol Soft, alcohol 52%

I’m using PowerISO on Win7 x64, it does cost to register, though it will work fine unregistered for mounting ISO’s & many other image formats.

The unregistered version will display a dialog prompts you to register, and you can not create or edit image files greater than 300MB with the unregistered version

What I now have seems to be working well for me (ISO Recorder 3.1 and Virtual Clonedrive). The only glitch is that sometimes browsing to a destination with ISO Recorder 3.1, Explorer.exe crashes and I have to restart it. After that everything keeps working fine. It has happened 3 or 4 times today as I’ve been doing some ISO backups.

    • #1192361

I’ve been using virtual clone drive since Windows XP without any problems. It’s freeware, and you can get it at http://www.slysoft.com/en/virtual-clonedrive.html
