Hi there, I have just made my first website. And most to my shock all the hover buttons don’t work. Can you please tell me why and what to do about it. They will work on my machine but on no other machine.
    Thanks for your help

What do you mean by ‘do not work’?

They do not have a mouse-over effect, such as glowing? – or they don’t function as hyperlinks?

What browsers are you using on the ‘other’ machines?

The buttons show up as grey, dull and the links won’t work either. Its rather frustrating as I crated them the correct way.
I use CuteFTP to tranfer my files to the internet. The site I am talking about is http://www.aapnz.org.nz.
        Thanks for your help

Check for Java and scripting permissions on the browsers that will not show them properly.

Unfortunately, Hover buttons – although delightfully simple to use – are prone to misinterpretation by some browsers – attached graphic shows what they look like when viewed with NS6, (NS4 is slightly more legible).

When you have the time, I suggest creating your own buttons from scratch using graphics – there is no chance the browser can mess up the font then. You will find plenty of examples here at The Javascript Source.

I looked at the page this morning and all seemed well to me. the Buttons seem to function as expected using IE6

These are fun. In IE 5.5 SP2, on Windows 2000 SP2, at 1024×768, with the window sized to about 80% of the screen, they look great. smile

I think there are some risks in trusting different Java Virtual Machines (or Microsoft Virtual Machines) to interpret some of these parameters. For example, what is the Dialog font? Is that the font I set in the Windows control panel as the typeface for dialogs? The size also is a problem, because 8 points (if that’s what 8 represents) will look quite different at different display resolutions.

As for why they appear off-center in the NS6 example, well… that does appear to be beyond your control. If you need the broadest compatibility, graphics probably are better, and if you compare the time to download the graphics with the time required to initialize a java applet, it might not be any slower to use little GIFs.
