Hotmail with Outlook 2003?

I’ve read that in order to access Hotmail with Outlook that you need to install the Outlook Connector. But I’ve used Windows Mail to access Hotmail, so it seems that Outlook should be able to do the same, without the need for any extra software. Anyone have any experience with this? I am running Outlook 2003 on Vista.

Windows Mail and Windows Live Mail are built to specifically handle the requirements to access Hotmail and interact with its structure. Outlook is not. So, you need the Outlook Connector to fully access your Hotmail account.

You only need to enable IMAP in Gmail – see Enabling IMAP.
You can then add Gmail as a new account in Outlook – see Outlook 2003.

My wife wants a free email to work with her Outlook. I guess I’d rather not do the Outlook connector if I do not need to, so I think I’ll go with Gmail.

Why the relutance to use the Outlook Connector? It is a small download, free, easy to install. I use it at work & home for 4 different Hotmail/Live accounts without a hitch.

Hi.

I do have a problem with Outlook connector. When you send an email to John Smith from hotmail, your sent message is saved in the Sent Items under the To column as John Smith (jsmith@hotmail.com). However, when you send a similar message through Outlook, your sent item is saved in the Sent Items under the To column as yourname@hotmail.com.

This seems to be a small problem but when you reply to too many people, you will start to see that all messages were sent to you and you don’t have an idea is to who the person you sent the email to unless you open the message.

I contacted MS and they said it is a bug in how hotmail deals with outlook. So I upgraded to version 14 of Connector and I am using Outllok 2003. This solved the problem.

The one problem that I have with connector is that my calender in Outlook and Office Live do not sync…version 14 of connector?? Microsoft says that version is only for Office 2010???

My Outlook 2003 works fine with Connector 14 and everything syncs. I’ll look into it and post here.

You can access both hotmail and gmail accounts as pop3/smtp accounts in outlook. For some reason this is a little-known fact, but I have one of each myself running in Outlook 2K2 and in Thunderbird.

These settings are for Outlook 2002, but 2003 and 2007 terminology is very similar.

Settings for hotmail:

Your information:
Your name: whatever you want
Email address: your hotmail email address
Login information:
User name: your hotmail email address
Password: your hotmail password
Incoming mail server: pop3.live.com
Outgoing mail server: smtp.live.com
More settings button:
Outgoing server tab:
My server requires authentication checked
Use same settings as incoming mail server radio button
Advanced tab:
Incoming server pop3 port: 995
Check in “This server requires an SSL secured Connection”
Outgoing server smtp port: 25
Check in “This server requires an SSL secured Connection”
(Note, if your isp blocks port 25 you cannot send. Try port 465)

Radio button enabled for “Use same settings as my incoming mail server”
Advanced tab:
Incoming server POP3 port: 995
Check in “This server requires an SSL secured Connection”
Outgoing server SMTP port:465
Check in “This server requires an SSL secured connection.

The nice this about this is it doen’t preclude using the webmail interface as well, and in the case of gmail the messages don’t get deleted from the server. Also I have found the gmail pop/smtp service has stayed up even during their periodic webmail outages.
