Hotmail-Compatible e-Mail Client

Hi,

Is there a mail client compatible with Hotmail? I tried to configure my hotmail account with Outlook Express and an error message appeared at the “Send/Receive” dialog stating that I should upgrade (I believe to Hotmail Max) to gain OE access to my hotmail account.

Far as I checked, Mozilla Firefox isn’t Hotmail compatible, as neither is Eudora. It would seem the answer to my question is “no”, but ePrompter is able to alert me of and read new messages. Furthermore, I have just checked and ePrompter can also send mail through Hotmail accounts: even though the program’s “sent” status shows uncertain, I did receive the message in the recipient account. So, there is a way for mail clients to communicate with Hotmail accounts… I just wonder if anyone knows any such client?

Not any more. MS recently disabled access to Hotmail through OE and Outlook unless you previsously had one of those configured and were actively using that access method. Check Hotmail help for more information.

[/indent]Yes, but what about other mail clients? I’ve been using ePrompter for a long time without a problem. Does it make my account ePrompter-exclusive? In case other mail clients can handle Hotmail accounts, am I “late” for configuring these (because I hadn’t been actively checking mail with them)?

AFAIK, MS does not allow any other e-mail clients to access Hotmail. You may be able to dig up some open source software that will enable you to do it but I’m not aware of any.

I can’t speak for Hotmail, but I will share my experience with Yahoo! Mail. Several years back (2001, maybe?) they allowed free downloading with any POP client (Outlook, Outlook Express, Eudora, etc). Eventually, they turned that feature into a paid service. Since I relied on it so heavily, I started paying for it (around $20 US per year). I use it and love it – worth every penny.

I believe Hotmail went through a similar change. POP mail was free at first, then they switched it to just Outlook Express, then removed free client capabilities all together. It’s all about making money…

One funny fact: I also remember the moment Yahoo! POP access went paid. But, conspicuously, Yahoo! Argentina continued offering free POP access. I think at that time the limit was 6 Megs or 10 Megs. When Yahoo! made the jump to 250 Megs, Yahoo! Argentina made it too, and continued offering free POP access.

Now that Gmail offers 1 Gig and free POP access it’s not an alternative many people would consider.

In your case, when all you want to do is retain the good ol’ full-fledged Yahoo! mail, I suppose you’d rather shell out the $20 than change the domain to yahoo.com.ar and have the same service for free.

In my case, I seldom use my Hotmail account. I have it just for MSNing around. But sometimes it happens that contacts will send mail to my Hotmail account (will they ever learn?) instead of my primary e-mail address. ePrompter takes care of those (I’ll never get tired of remarking how good a program ePrompter is!), but messages are kept on the server and I’d feel more comfortable if I could download them to my HD. However, for its potential use, I’m not willing to get the paid service.

I wondered if some app out there could do the job. If not, well, I’ll manage with ePrompter just as I always did.

I use two email programs…

Outlook is what I use for my business and other primary accounts, including GMail.

I use IncrediMail to exclusively handle a couple of hotmail accounts. It retrieves my hotmail from two different accounts, puts it on my hard drive and then deletes the original message. I’ve had my hotmail addresses for years so I guess it’s possible that my ability to do this was grandfathered in… I do not know if IncrediMail can do this if the hotmail account is new. And IncrediMail is or a Premium version can be purchased.

Hello Rick,

Yes, I’ve known Incredimail for years. It’s currently my mother’s mail client on my PC, so I believe if I add my Hotmail account it will be kind of difficult to maintain our privacy. I’ll give it a try, though, to see if it is capable of handling any Hotmail account. If so, it might even result in my mother changing mail client by force .

It has been a few years since I read through the information, but it appears that Web2Pop still supports Hotmail. This is a program you install on your computer that wakes up when you try to retrieve mail from your ordinary POP mail client, such as Outlook Express, establishes an HTTP connection to Hotmail to retrieve your messages, and funnels them back to your mail program.

Added: Oops, sorry, Web2Pop is not free!

[/indent]Well, in fact I do correspond with you. Incredimail is so cute it ends up being a resource hog: each e-mail you open fires up a special animation, not to mention mail notifiers. Why do you think it’s my mother’s choice? Fortunately she likes all the cuteness and doesn’t need other more sophisticated features.

Regarding Web2Pop, I had found a similar, app when I got your reply: FreePOPs did the job just fine. The program must be running when OE goes fetch mail, but again, I use OE for this purpose so seldom that I don’t really mind.
