I upgraded a computer on my home network that was running WIndows98 to Windows XP Home Edition. I have two other computers on the network running Windows 2000. I had both TCP/IP and NetBEUI protocals running on all computers until the upgrade. Windows XP does not have NetBEUI. The Window XP machine can access the Internet through the LAN but cannot see the hard drives in the Windows 2000 machines nor can the Windows 2000 machines see the HD in the Windows XP machine. How do I correct this?

AskWoody LoungerNovember 19, 2001 at 3:22 am #552829I had a similar situation with a home network. The other PC (My wife’s) had Windows 2000 and did mine before XP Pro. XP Pro would not recognize the Windows 2000 PC until I uninstalled (disabled) NetBEUI. With no NetBEUI everything works very well. XP does not support NetBEUI, although it can be added from the install CD. The experts tell me it’s better just not to use it at all.

AskWoody LoungerNovember 19, 2001 at 2:32 pm #552917I thought of that and just unchecked netBEUI on my WIndow 2000 machines, but then none of the machines could see each other. Perhaps I will try removing netBEUI completely from my Window 2000 machines. Each of my computers has it’s own IP address, but a common SubNet Mask and Gateway address. Are these the correct TCP/IP settings?

AskWoody_MVPNovember 19, 2001 at 4:00 pm #552931Did you disable the “Firewall” in XP?
Do you have the same accounts and passwords on the 2K machine and XP machine?
Also on the 2K machine do you have the “Guest” account active?
I have a 4 computer network running, one machine with XP and one with 2K and two with Me. I have NOT removed or disabled the netBEUI on the 2K and Me machines and the network works great. I just need to remember to turn OFF the MS Firewall, I run ZoneAlarm, and I have Guest active on my 2K machine. On every build I have installed, I have not had any networking problems, once I have the shares running and the firewall turned off.
