Great sleuthing – and a disturbing story – from How-to Geek’s Chris Hoffman: Windows 10’s April 2019 Update (version 1903, expected any day now) conta

This is why my legacy gaming PC will never see Windows 10.  Its only reason for existence is to play those sorts of games that aren’t going to get the sort of developer support that Microsoft seems to think every developer is obligated to provide.

I’d love to see what would happen if they pulled this level of stunt with the Xbox.

Tough spot for Microsoft to be in…… how much nasty cruft should they keep in Windows going into the 2020s, in order to support games from the 1990s and early 2000s that abused the OS in all sorts of crazy ways in order to extract maximum performance?

I mean, we have DOSBox for pretty much that one reason — so we can play games from before the mid-1990s on a modern system.  Right?  Anyone remember QEMM386 or Rational Systems DOS/4GW?

Maybe someday there will be a “NT5box” that will make it possible to run games from that era in modern operating systems.  Maybe Wine could do it today?  Dunno….

Well, there are certain applications already that seem to work better in Linux+Wine than in Windows 10…

I really expect that we’ll see a lot more of game-optimized virtualization solutions.

(As for DOS/4GW … not my favorite DOS extender. Oh well, you could do all kinds of interesting things from DOS with the better extenders, but at some point it became just quicker and easier to switch to a more advanced operating system. Too bad MS didn’t push Xenix more… and the “DOS mode” on Sun386 boxes was just weird.)

I assume this will only affect multi-player games—ie played online—and not single-player, played locally. I have a lot of games I only play locally, but no anti-cheat software I’m aware of.

This reminds me of the old days of DRM software breaking PCs.

I wonder which side is at fault here. Has MS broken it, or were the anti-cheat software apps using ‘dark’ tactics which dug deep into the Windows kernel?

Still, breaking Fortnite—even if Epic Games are the real culprit—is potentially a big PR mess in waiting for MS. “The latest Win10 update broke Fortnite” is what the headlines will be, never mind what the root cause is.

A pity, because so far I’ve found Win10 better at handling ancient games & software than Win7.

      Lugh.

I thought windows 10 will be the perfect OS for gaming… From the day it was released, not sure it is the case…I might be wrong, but it seems for gamers, right now, w10 IS the problem…

I still hope for the best with w10. Maybe in 10 years… I am not a high tech person, I am curious, and I like to learn something new about computers when I have free time. I began with windows Millenium, almost 20 years ago. I have 3 machines with w10, pro or family. Updating scares me every time LOL

I never had any fear to update millenium, xp, seven…
