    Hi,

I have two verisons of a document – with a few changes between them. Both should contain cross referencing to parts within the document, however in my later version the Cross Reference fields state that the REference Source is not found. When you check there are no _Ref hidden bookmarks within the document.

What I want to know is if there is a way that I can copy the bookmarks from the working version into the version where they are missing?

    Thanks in advance

    Alba

Should have mentioned that we are using Office 2003. Ta!

      Bookmarks are very fragile.

Have you tried copying them (including at least one character on either side of the bookmark)?

Thanks Charles – the issue is that the document is over 100 pages long and I am trying to to have to go through and identify each and every Cross Reference within the document. What I was hoping was if the _Ref was moved between documents that the cross reference would miraculously start working again!?

If what you are referring to by the term _Ref is a bookmark, then you can copy a bookmark into another document, so long as it has a different name from already existing bookmarks. Try pressing AltF9. That displays fields. Is what you are talking about a field? I doubt it.

You can display bookmarks under the options.
Which version of Word are you using? The path to get to display of bookmarks differs after Word 2003.

If you copied across the cross reference but not the target (where the the hidden bookmark resides) then that is the problem.
Repair choices which are very labour intensive are:
      1. Replace all cross references
      2. Copy all targets from source document
      3. Work out the cross-reference’s bookmark name and add that to where the target should be.

Another possibility is to save both documents and then use the compare documents feature to get a view of the differences. Depending on which direction you do the comparison, perhaps you can merge the required changes into the version with the bookmarks.
