Disappointing – but at least we have something. A few additional changes in Win10 Insider beta build 14291 InfoWorld Woody on Windows

One day we may really replace voluntarily IE11 with Edge. Edge as is today gives the feeling of targeting phones rather than desktops and this is one of the reasons why it is not the browser of choice for most people who adopted Windows 10.
Interesting to follow how it evolves.

Description sounds a lot like the less-than-effective pseudo-extension features in Chrome.

Having wrestled with some of the Chrome capabilities as a developer and seen posts from respectable developers of old-style Firefox extensions, I know that Chrome doesn’t allow user-installed extensions the full power of the computer they run on, nor the ability to override any and all unwanted Chrome behavior.

Firefox has apparently made announcements about removing these abilities from Firefox, which would leave the world with very few options for those wanting functionality beyond the pale.

Sure stuff like cloud translation or reformatting selected websites (RES sounds like it uses the latter capability) is all fun and flashy. And sure you can make something that *looks* like an ad-blocker by reformatting pages to make likely adds invisible (but wont stop the add companies from tracking you).

The ability to play Adobe Flash videos and games was never the point of the extension systems introduced in the 1990s, and the ability to do those things inside an expanded web sandbox (HTML5, WebAssembly, NaCl, …) plus the known bugs in the top 3 browser extensions is no proper reason to dumb down the entire system into a glorified TV.
