Ed Bott of ZDNet has recently posted his article on how to either get or block the Windows 10 October 2018 Update:

Well if you have a couple of minutes you could always try this little trick with WUMT:
      https://www.askwoody.com/forums/topic/windows-10-home-etc-set-wumt-to-auto-check-updates/#post-210409
It kept 1803 off my 1709 machine but using a manual check, so the above just checks automatically on Boot up/Logon with no user intervention. The Addendum below just sets the trick to run more often I would ignore following that unless you like to be closing WUMT Box’s regularly but the initial trick does work especially for Win10 Home victi ermm users and only takes a few mins to set up. One caveat, alas not tested with this Win10 1803 to 1809 yet, but since June its been catching all the updates and drivers effortlessly and done in about 2-3 mins and off course you can hide the offending items that come down the “Update chute” with a couple of clicks.

I realize that this is step-by-step to halt Windows 10 updates.

I also think that this process is fairly complicated for the average computer user.

What is the next step when halting updates fails?

In theory, new versions of Windows 10 will be deemed “ready for widespread deployment” four months after initial release — in the case of 1809, that would be in early April 2019.

      That would be six months.

There’s no warning about the shift to Semi-Annual Channel. Microsoft just declares a new version to be ready for full availability, for reasons as yet unknown, and that same day, the new version starts rolling out to those on the Semi-Annual Channel branch.

STILL fake news. There has been an advanced notification each time.

Searched my machine for Windows10Upgrade.exe. Found it in C:\Windows\WinSxS\amd64_microsoft-windows-oobe-gwe_31bf3856ad364e35_10.0.10586.1480_none_2fe3c9127a68c2f3

Unable to delete it. First it says “You’ll  need to provide Administrator permission to delete this file.” I pressed continue and checked Yes when prompted by UAC. UAC then told me that “You require permission from TrustedInstaller to make changes to this file.”

Get that? I need permission from TrustedInstaller to delete a file from my computer.

How low can you go MS?

BTW – Who is TrustedInstaller? Anyone got a phone number or email address? Facebook ID? Really need to talk to this gal. Soon.

    • #221264

Huh, advanced notification – where?! You suppose an average Joe Victim user who’s bought his W10 Home laptop in a local Kwik-E-Mart to actively search for so called “notifications” somewhere in M$ press releases? Gotta be kidding me. #facepalm

Current Branch for Business (Semi-Annual Channel) is not relevant to Windows 10 Home (unless Joe has edited the registry).

My Bolding: so what exactly does editing the registry in this instance as per your example, achieve and what needs editing? just curious..

The wifi meter trick does not work on Windows 10 home. My clients got update to the 1809 version with that turn on. Time to disable Windows Updates and be done with it.

      • #221477

Lemme make sure I understand this. It’s important.

Win10 Home, version 1803 (?), internet connection set to Metered.

Did they click Check for updates?

        Thanks….

    • #221305

One clarification for keeping 1809 off your PRO-WIN10 machine, when using wushowhide.  Be sure the advanced option in windows update is set to SEMI-ANNUAL CHANNEL (TARGETED).  If it is set to just SEMI-ANNUAL CHANNEL you will not see it in wushowhide (at least for now).

Can anyone confirm if win10 1809 also includes spectre and meltdown cpu microcode/update?

    • #221459

Warning: Win10 v1809 deletes documents and pictures because the user-profile isn’t copied correctly.

      Make a backup before upgrade.

        Hello,

I’m reading posts that suggest that 1809 boots with different microcode update and they are checking their version they know they should have with HWInfo64 showing something different.   Could you look into that a bit more?

    • #221481

I have Win10 Pro v1709 Build 16299.699 fully up to date plus the Sept preview KB4457136 in a VM.
Settings: metered, GP auto update = 2(notify), SAC, 365, 0, no pause.
      Computer is Ivy Bridge i7.

Yesterday I took it off metered, checked for updates – no 1809.
Set it to SACT, rebooted, checked for updates – no 1809.

I have never had an update reject the VMs qualifications before.
So it is evidently respecting the feature delay = 365.

Cautionary tale for those wanting to avoid the, ahem, charms of Win 1809.
Happy 1803, 1709 users may want to keep hidden files display enabled in the interim
as on 02/10/18 the mysterious $WINDOWS.~BT folder appeared on one of the 1803 Home machines at, according to the Panther Logs, 18:56 PM on release day ostensibly inventorying the machine in question and that’s normally a sure sign that something’s afoot, now deleted; So if you see it you may want to delete it, although its probably going to come back and be extra vigilant unless you want the upgrade in the very near future.

      Side Note about Wushowhide

Have a look at the bottom of KB 3073930

It says “3183922 How to temporarily prevent a Windows Update from reinstalling in Windows 10″ while KB 3183922 says 3073930 – How to temporarily prevent a driver update from reinstalling in Windows 10″. I am guessing the Wushowhide is the same in both cases.

There is only one wushowhide.diagcab –  it hides updates for windows and driver updates (and some other MS product updates as well).

      Instructions on [https://www.computerworld.com/article/3232632/microsoft-windows/how-to-block-the-windows-10-october-2018-update-version-1809-from-installing.html] describe

Step 1. Go to KB 3073930 and download Microsoft’s Wushowhide tool. (Click the link marked “Download the ‘Show or hide updates’ troubleshooter package now.”) Drag the downloaded file, Wushowhide.diagcab, to any convenient location.
Step 2. Double-click on Wushowhide.diagcab to run it.
Step 3. This part’s important. Click the link marked Advanced. Uncheck the box marked “Apply repairs automatically.” Click Next.

Step 2 the initial install screen that i have shows two choices:

      1.   –>Hide Updates
      2.  –>Show Hidden Updates

      Which is the correct choice?

Step 3 suggests to me that there should be an “Advanced” check box on the initial install screen where i have the two choices.  There is no such “Advanced” option for me.

I want to get this right.  Please guide me.ScreenHunter-130

        You should see this:
Advanced is in lower left, then uncheck “apply repairs automatically.

        Screen-Shot-2018-10-08-at-7.33.59-AM

“Hide updates” lets you see the pending updates and check the ones you want to hide.
“Show hidden updates” shows the ones that are hidden. You can check the ones you want to unhide.

Hypothesis: Windows 10 Defender is turning off Metering hence Windows 10 Updates are installing. I believe this happened to me while I was trying to prevent KB4023057 and KB4023814. (Windows 10 Home 1709)
I have Windows10FirewallControl so I can block Defender except when I want to update definitions.

    • #241952

Wushowhide.diagcab no longer sees 1809 in Windows 10 home. I presume microsoft have done something here.

I have been using it for a long time without a problem , but it definitly doesn’t work with 1809.
