After installing the July 2024 Windows security update, released July 9, 2024 (the Originating KBs listed above), you might see a BitLocker recovery screen upon booting your device. This screen does not commonly appear after a Windows update. You are more likely to face this issue if you have the Device Encryption option enabled in Settings under Privacy & Security -> Device encryption. Resulting from this issue, you might be prompted to enter the recovery key from your Microsoft account to unlock your drive.

Resolution: This issue was resolved by Windows updates released August 13, 2024 (the Resolved KBs listed above), and later. We recommend you install the latest update for your device as it contains important improvements and issue resolutions, including this one.

If you install an update released August 13, 2024 (the Resolved KBs listed above) or later, you do not need to use a workaround for this issue. If you are using an update released before August 13, 2024, and have this issue, your device should proceed to start up normally from the BitLocker recovery screen once the recovery key has been entered. You can retrieve the recovery key by logging into the BitLocker recovery screen portal with your Microsoft account. Detailed steps for finding the recovery key are listed here: Finding your BitLocker recovery key in Windows.

Just a “heads up” for those running Windows 10 22H2: KB5042352, this month’s .NET Framework update, does NOT contain any new security updates, per the associated KB article on Microsoft’s site at the following URL: https://support.microsoft.com/kb/5042352

       Security Improvements

There are no new security improvements in this release. This update is cumulative and contains all previously released security improvements.

Therefore, if you only install .NET Framework updates that have security patches, AND you’ve installed July’s .NET Framework update that was released back on July 9th (KB5041019), you can skip this month’s update if you wish.

However, if you are experiencing any issues that this month’s patch fixes, by all means, install away once Susan gives the go-ahead for this month.

Is GRC’s InControl supposed to block this update from installing?  If so, it didn’t this time. I turned my laptop on and see that KB5042099 and KB5041585 have been installed.

      InControl_settings

      • #2696347

As very clearly stated in the InControl window.

Security updates will be received and installed as usual. But all feature updates and OS upgrading are under YOUR control.

Neither of those KB’s is a “feature/OS” update!

If you want to block Security/Cumulative updates, you need to set the Configure Automatic Updates Group Policy to

2- Notify for download and auto install

`Don’t know if this is the place but here goes…..past now 3 months Win 10 has not installed the major downloads, the “minor” downloads are installed with no problems. True to form, updates all were installed except the major one and the error code this time is “0x800f0831”. Each month the error code is different but the problem is the same, update downloads and tries to install and I’m informed update did not install along with the error code, this time 0x800f0831. Machine is old, operator is older, not much good at very tech involved fixes…..Any help out there??? Thanks, S Rubin

      Hardened Windows user:

This month was unusual in that my NAS got the push Tuesday, my desktop had nothing available yesterday but got the push this morning, as did my E5420 laptop.

KB5042099 Cumulative Update for .NET Framework 3.5 and 4.8.1 for Windows 11, version 23H2 for x64
KB5041585 Cumulative Update for Windows 11 Version 23H2 for x64-based Systems

And the software removal tool, as usual.

      No hiccups.

All three now running Windows 11 Pro Version 23H2 (OS Build 22631.4037).

        Hello;

Did you get a second restart?  I did with the main update KB5041585.

Because of my clumsiness pressing keys, things did not go as smoothly as they could have, but I got KB5041585 and the .NET framework installed eventually.

        Windows 11 Pro 23H2.

Did not install MSRT as I consider it non-essential.  I only install it occasionally.

No second restart.  I always download and install everything that is offered before I click on the Restart now button.

Did not install MSRT as I consider it non-essential. I only install it occasionally.

The only thing that the MSRT “update” does is to run a scan of your machine for a select group of malware right after you download it.

If it finds anything, I would think that it might prompt you to restart your machine to aid in removal of whatever it found. I say this because I’ve never had it find a thing during its scans in the last several years.

Googling the term “Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool” should bring up a few hits (at least a few of which should be from Microsoft) with a decent description of the tool’s operation and the malware it scans for.

FYI, for Windows 11 systems (22H2, 23H2, 24H2) the August Cumulative update is changing start menu functionality for the logged in user Icon/Picture. Before the patch when you opened the start menu and clicked on the picture/icon for the logged in user it opened a up a menu where you could select change account settings, lock, sign out, or switch user. After the August cumulative update clicking on the picture/icon for the logged in user now brings up a detail information box with account information and an option to “Manage my account”. To log out or switch user you have to click on a triple dot menu in the upper right hand of the detail box to be able to select sign out or switch user.
Feels like taking something simple that worked and making it more complicated for no real reason.

      Windows 10 22H2 KB5041580

Interestingly enough ALSO refers to those same issues being addressed…but only linked under the Windows 10 LTSC releases……I’ll be asking around as to what that means.

I’ve never understood why they always put the full info under the older version (listed last) and only a cross-reference under the newer version (listed first):

      Windows 10, version 22H2

This build includes all the improvements from the supported Windows 10, version 21H2 editions.

It’s backwards (i.e., would be much easier to read the other way round).

      • #2696499

        – Compatibility is backwards
        – The lower version is the one with real build number, later versions are virtual (registry-only) build numbers
although in Windows 10 1904x situation, both active versions are fake

After imaging “Canary” with IFW I downloaded and installed the updates for Aug. Here’s the results:
      XPS8920-203408-Windows-Updates

I find it interesting that although I had PowerShell 7.4.4 installed WU decided to install 7.4.3 & 7.4.4 all over again.

FYI: just because it appears that 7.4.3 was installed after 7.4.4. When I start PS up it shows 7.4.4.

FYI2: The above screenshot was taken and modified with ShareX freeware. I’ll admit the interface is confusing and quirky but it does a nice job of annotation making your points clear to the reader.

I had a quirky install with KB5041751 on Win 11 24H2. It would go through alright, but upon logging in and the system connecting to Windows Update again, it would say I needed to restart. Restarting would lead to the reminder to restart again. Repeat ad infinitum.

After hearing that the start menu would be updated it occurred to me that Open Shell might be interfering with the install. Sure enough, after uninstalling Open Shell, the update finally got everything right.

      Hi Susan:

Windows Update successfully installed all updates offered for the Aug 2024 Patch Tuesday on my Win 10 Pro v22H2 laptop, and I haven’t noticed any problems so far. This includes:

      • KB5041580: 2024-08 Cumulative Update for Win 10 Version 22H2 for x64 (OS Build 19045.4780)
      • KB5042352: 2024-08 Cumulative Update for .NET Framework 3.5, 4.8 and 4.8.1 for Windows 10 Version 222H2 for x64
      • KB5042132: 2024-07 .NET 8.0.8 Security Update for x64 Client
      • KB890830 : Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool x64 – v5.127

As usual, I observed the early “Restart Now” glitch this month that always occurs when Windows Update delivers a .NET Framework update with my other my Patch Tuesday updates . Installation of this month’s cumulative KB5041580 Quality Update seemed to get stuck a few times when the Status reached “Pending Install” (see attached image) and again at “Installing: 20%”, but I checked again about 10 min later and the Status had changed to “Pending Restart”.

There were no extra restarts required this month and the only odd thing I noticed after the system restart was the notification shown below nagging me to run the “new” Windows Backup [installed on my Win 10 machine in Sept 2023 by KB5030211 (OS Build 19045.3448) and discussed in your 02-Oct-2023 topic Microsoft Backup triggers help-desk calls and confusion]. Latest Windows 11 update is reportedly causing freezes and lags for some users

If you have installed the latest batch of Windows 11 Updates and could boot fine into the system after installation, congratulations. Reports suggest that the update is causing issues on some systems…

Users affected by the issue say that the update is slowing down their systems to a crawl.
Others say that the update would not even install…

      • #2697031

TL;DR: A few users had minor issues (as every month).

A quick Feedback Hub shows several reports about the issue. Two users say that it is failing to install, another that it is causing lack of memory errors. Not a lot at this point.

    • #2696965

Just mention that I got several reports, that Update KB5041578 (August 2024) causes performance issues on some systems with Windows Server 2019/Windows 10 Enterprise 2019 LTSC. Some Windows Server 2019 are un-useable. I’ve covered the topic and also a possible workaround at:
      <p class=”entry-title”>Windows Server 2019/Windows 10 Enterprise 2019 LTSC: Performance Issues with Update KB5041578</p>

no such problems encountered with the KB5041578 update installed on a few of my Win10 PCs running LTSC 2019 v1809, Günter Born

they start up fine with KB5041578 and no performance losses

          Yes.

Using Firefox 129.0.1 with no ad blockers, just its own built-in blocking tools and I (like @b ) don’t see any of those screens asking for consent to enter the site, I just get right to the page with no prompts at all.

I looked at the privacy statement for the site earlier today and found no such wording, so I wonder if they might need to revise their Privacy statement, located at https://borncity.com/win/privacy-statement/, so it coincides with what you and @EP are getting by surfing to the site with uBO enabled.

FYI, for you, Alex and you, @EP , I just checked the same link with Edge with its built-in blocking and surfing protection enabled to the hilt, but no other extensions of any kind enabled, and I got the same thing you both did, so I believe it’s that Firefox might be blocking those prompts with their built-in cookie prompt blocking mechanism for now. BUT, the cookie prompt blocker is only supposed to work in private browsing mode, not regular browsing mode. Go figure!

      Hey Y’all,

Seems that MS is at it again.

Yesterday my wife could access a link in an email but the buttons on the linked page wouldn’t work. I poked around and realized that MS had changed her Outlook 365 to open links in Edge! I change it to Chrome and all was well.

A few minutes ago I got a call from one of our Residents who could no longer access his BellSouth email via the link I had provided for him on his home screen. The link would open but no emails would show up. Again after a little poking around MS had changed his default email and browser to Edge. Changed back to Chrome and everything worked as it should.

Not sure why the change in default browser would cause these behaviors, but sure enough it does.

May the Forces of good computing be with you!

There must be a reason why buttons etc. don’t work in Edge though, like Tracking Prevention or Enhanced Security being set to Strict (“Parts of sites might not work”) instead of Balanced.

@TechTango , are you using Firefox (or one of its forks) for your browser on that page?

BTW, Firefox takes a page from disconnect.me for some of its tracking content blocking. That gives me an idea. Hold on a sec while I test something…

And I’m back. I tried reducing the tracking protection level from level 2 (strict, blocking ALL trackers) to level 1 (recommended, blocks most trackers, but allows some through so as not to “break” websites, especially logins). No difference, I still didn’t see what @EP and @Alex5723 are seeing. Oh well.

    • #2697073

@TechTango , are you using Firefox (or one of its forks) for your browser on that page?

No.  I use chromium based Brave.

I still didn’t see what  @EP and  @Alex5723 are seeing.

      Interesting, thanks.

      • #2697107

        @TechTango

Although I didn’t get it in Firefox, I did get it when I tried the webpage in Edge, as I documented above in the last paragraph. BTW, that was in Edge fully updated to version 127.0.2651.105 with all its built-in tracking protection set to maximum levels and browsing protection set to maximum levels as well.

Since you don’t get it using a fork of the chromium project, Brave, but I got it using another fork of the chromium project, Edge, then perhaps whether or not the consent banner is displayed is based upon the browser’s user agent string either including the word “Chrome” or not. Perhaps your copy of Brave doesn’t use the word “Chrome” in its user agent string, whereas maybe Edge does.

        Just a thought.

After MS Defcon was set to 3 the other day I used wushowhide to show the previously hidden August updates for Windows 10 22H2, the MSRT, .Net and the .Net Framework.  Clicked the “Check for updates” button and the updates were installed without incident.

And then I turn on my system today and am greeted with a pending update for KB5042320 which I have just hidden.  I thought that my system had dodged the Windows RE bullet but I guess they caught up to me!

You’re missing a digit in the KB number. there are only 6 digits when there should be 7 digits.  😉

EDIT to add: Post is now fixed showing the full KB number which is one of the replacement KBs for the now-withdrawn (and infamous) KB5034441.

    • #2697905

Yeah I think I got hit with this update just now on august 20th but since there was a buffer overide attempt the day before I though it might be hackers since my updates are turned off. Anyway I was in bed just waking up due to getting a nasty cold at 2am by the time the system booted after loading to 30% I and did the second restart to complete it I had pulled the ethernet cable from the computer… it then tried to complete the install but said it could not be completed then rolled back the update.

I am just confused how updates are even possible when updates and remote connections are turned off and you are running a local client. It simply should not be happening at all its pretty clear you indicate you don’t want auto updates when you turn off your automatic updates and windows update and orchestration services. The fact it is still updating is mind blowing. I now must go check to see if the disabled services were restarted or something.

      • #2697907

Yeah it seemed the orchestration service was restarted at some point, maybe an oversight on my part but windows updates was still set to manual. I always make an effort that all updates need to be manually installed this auto update stuff is criminal.

    • #2697940

When the start type of a Windows service is set to manual it means that the service will not start automatically when the system is started. However, it is possible for the system to start such services at a later point without user intervention.  The start type of a service must be set to disabled to preclude it from running. Even that is no guarantee since a process running with sufficient privileges can change the start type of a disabled service.

    • #2697941

My Windows Update Service has always been set to Manual on all my installations of Win8.1/10/11. Other factors are involved – like scheduled tasks in Task Manager or Registry settings, for example.

    • #2697942

      Susan,

Since applying the August Windows Updates to my Windows 10 computer, several programs stopped loading unless I “Run as Administrator”. Each program exhibits the same User Account Control Window

    • #2697949

Since installing the August Windows 10 update to my laptop running the latest Windows 10, Microsoft Windows [Version 10.0.19045.4780], some programs have stopped running unless I “Run as Administrator”. The User Account Control Window which I uploaded in my previous message #2697942 pops up first. Answering “Yes” allows the program to proceed to run normally. I haven’t exhaustively tried all the programs installed on my laptop.

Adobe Acrobat Elements v15 exhibits this behavior, too. Several additional windows pop up prior to the program running normally: AppContainerIncompatibilityInProtectedMode, and AdobeAcrobatProtectedMode.

I’ve not posted here in years. I’ll try to include those windows in this post…

      AppContainerIncompatibility
      AdobeAcrobatProtectedMode

    • #2698034

I turned off protected mode here:

Select Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Security and then Virus & threat protection > Manage settings > Switched the Real-time protection setting to Off and choose Yes to verify

To no change in the symptoms.

Is there another means to turn off protected mode that I should try?

      • #2698037

Adobe Acrobat runs in protected by default. I think that is what Susan was referring to when she said “turn off protected mode.” Did you read the info at her links?

I don’t think she was referring to Windows Defender. It is not safe to run without A/V protections.

    • #2698038

Yes, I read the info in her links. They were Adobe. Nothing specific about protected mode that I gleaned. I only turned off protected mode in anti-virus to test loading programs, then turned it back on. It did not enable starting programs which failed after the August Windows Update.

I have to search around to understand how to turn off protected mode in a program.

      • #2698040

Protected Mode is Adobe’s primary defense-in-depth security strategy for mitigating and preventing security vulnerabilities. It protects you by limiting what malicious files can do and access. Protected Mode is enabled by default in Acrobat Reader. It runs silently in the background while protecting your hardware and data.

      • #2698054

Instruction on how to disable Protected Mode from Susan’s first adobe.com link.

Disable Protected Mode by going to Edit > Preferences > Security (Enhanced) and deselecting Enable Protected Mode at startup.

Restart Adobe Acrobat or Acrobat Reader.

    • #2698066

Disabled Acrobat Protected Mode per direction.

Partially resolved issue. Still must “Run as Administrator”. Program starts after answering “Yes” in User Access Control window. Adobe Acrobat Protected Mode window which asked “Open with Protected Mode disabled” does not pop up.

Further, this does not resolve the problem with non-Adobe programs such as Syncovery.

      • #2698067

In case you haven’t, you should really re-enable Defender protection.
Check your other program settings for Protected Mode.

      • #2698072

Further, this does not resolve the problem with non-Adobe programs such as Syncovery.

Are you running the latest version of Syncovery? The latest version available for download from their site is 10.15.9.243. Does that match your version number indicated from within Syncovery? Sometimes when third party vendors learn of a new behavior within Windows that could affect the performance of their product, they modify their program to accommodate Windows’ new behavior and release a new, but slightly different, version.

It’s also possible that one of the security fixes included with the August Windows 10 update changed Windows’ behavior such that this is a new and permanent behavior when Windows sees that a program wants to carry our a certain sequence of events or a certain set of sequences of events.

        • #2698076

Yes, it’s the latest version of Syncovery, 10.15.9.243. I’m in contact with Tobias Giesen, the originator of Syncovery, about this problem.

Defender protection re-enabled back at post #2698038.

How to check other program settings for Protected Mode? You’re asking me to open every program that I find that fails to load after the August Windows Update? The program Syncovery which fails to load properly has no settings for Protected Mode.

I’m going to try to roll Windows back prior to the August update to see if that restores normal operation.

Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > View update history > Uninstall updates.
The August Updates I find under Quality Updates are two, both installed 08/18/2024.

      2024-08 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 22H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5042352)

      2024-08 Cumulative Update for .NET Framework 3.5, 4.8, and 4.8.1 for Windows 10 Version 22H2 for x64 (KB5042352)

Reboot I’ll reboot the PC and tell you how it goes…

    • #2698086

I uninstalled one of the August Windows updates. That resolved the issue. Syncovery and the Adobe programs launch normally, operate normally.

When I got to the Uninstall an update window, it showed several updates on 8/18/2024. None of them were the ones I listed in my previous post. Instead, I uninstalled the topmost Microsoft Windows update, “Security Update for Microsoft Windows (KB5041580)”.

Upon reboot, the Syncovery program and the Adobe programs launch and operate normally.

I went back to the Uninstall an update window. A new update, today, 8/20/2024, replaced the one I uninstalled: “Security Update for Microsoft Windows (KB5040427)”.

I’m a retired IT person, age 75 years. I’m satisfied the issue is resolved. Thank you for your help.

      • #2698101

Just to be clear, the update that you just installed KB5040427 is from July 9, 2024 and has not been modified since that date according to the Microsoft update catalog. The catalog documents that it was replaced by the now uninstalled KB5041580. So it’s not actually a “new” update.

        @HarryJacobson –

Although you have the programs working again to your satisfaction after having uninstalled the August security update, the security updates for Windows are cumulative so if you install any subsequent security update for Windows in September or beyond, the behavior you didn’t want may very well return unless Microsoft issues a fix for it which may or may not happen or Adobe and/or Syncovery issue updates to compensate for the behavior.

Please keep that in mind going forward.

At this point, you’re also probably vulnerable to the IPv6 mess unless you have disabled that protocol already.

Also, please let us know what you hear from the Syncovery originator about your problem. He may very well be able to modify its behavior so that it doesn’t trigger the UAC prompt.

Today, August 26, 2024, Windows Update re-installed the Security Update for Microsoft Windows (KB5041580). You may recall, several posts back, that uninstalling KB5041580 resolved the original issue of Syncovery and the Adobe programs failing to load.

After that update was installed today, Syncovery and Adobe still worked fine, loading and running properly.

          Go figure…
