Do the regular Plus members get to see the new beta newsletter, too?

Edit: Signed up for beta newsletter.

Nope. For Plus members, the Free newsletter is almost entirely repetitious. (The only exception is the call to sign up for Plus membership.)

      Free newsletter looks great!

Nothing is free there’s always a catch could be metrics they’re after or some other tac.

      • #2209583

I definitely understand that point of view…

But, having done some testing for Woody before, and using an e-mail reserved just for that sign up, I can say that I never got any spam e-mail.

Asking for volunteers allows the bugs to be worked out before it goes out to actual subscribers. So… you are doing something that will improve the experience for other people.

Personally, I’m grateful to Woody and the people who are so helpful here… and have had no problems, ever, with volunteering. It is my way to give back, what I can.

The FREE Newsletter is free. 100%. I guard my mailing lists jealously and have never, ever, ever loaned them out. For any purpose.

In a departure from other AskWoody products, though, I’m going to have advertising in the free newsletter. I’m hoping it’ll become self-sufficient.

There’s no advertising here on the site. (Did you notice?) None in the paid newsletter. But I will have it in the free newsletter. So, yes, in that sense it isn’t free as in beer.

Remember, AskWoody isn’t part of a multinational conglomerate. It’s just me sitting here in Tennessee, with a tremendous web of volunteers from all around the globe. Financially, we broke even last month — first time ever — but this month isn’t looking so hot. More about that later.

I signed up using a different email address than my plus one comes to.

2 hours later and it hasn’t appeared in the inbox. I also checked spam – not there.

Where is is coming from so I can whitelist it? (*@askwoody.com)

I took a look at the FREE newsletter and it is quite nice.

One suggestion: please provide a brief introduction of each contributor. Regulars know the contributors; those reading the FREE version may not.

Followup on above. I waited 4 hours, no email arrived so I sent an email to support here.

That email came through and was tagged as spam. <sigh> The newsletter was attached. Thanks Woody!

I had to change the format of the attachment to read it  – no problem once I figured out what I had to do.

So, I guess I can’t use that email address to signup for newsletters because they will be blocked.

Are you sure your mail didn’t change the email because it thought it was spam?

Try marking the email as “not spam” and see what it does.

        cheers, Paul

Thanks for the free newsletter, Woody!

I’m on a fixed income, so free is good, but I’m a big fan of yours and the “AskWoody” team and have followed your advice for some years now. Thanks for steering us computer novices on a safe course and keep up the great work!

Signed up early to help using the same email address. First issue looks fine, arrived normally, save to the right folder in my Pegasus client along with the rest of my AskWoody stuff. Forwarded to a friend.

Suddenly a scary question: After a couple more issues to make sure it’s working and to check out the advertising as it arrives, I’ll probably decide I don’t need the duplication and I’ll want to unsubscribe. Will unsubscribing from the free version have any effect on my Plus subscription since it uses the same email address? Has anyone tried cancelling the free version yet?

    • #2210217

The paid and free versions of the newsletter are currently sent from entirely different systems. One should have no effect on the other.

To PaulT, I’m not sure what you mean by this

Are you sure your mail didn’t change the email because it thought it was spam?

I don’t use any email program. I have quite a few email addresses all using webmail interfaces.

This was at the beginning of the message I received:

Spam detection software, running on the system "TEKNIK-SERVER",
has identified this incoming email as possible spam. The original
message has been attached to this so you can view it or label
similar future email. If you have any questions, see
the administrator of that system for details.

I can move the email to the inbox but teknik email has no option to mark it as not spam like other email sites I use. Teknik expects me to contact the sender of the email.

The free newsletter on its own has never arrived in spam or inbox. I suspect teknik is blocking it from ever showing up.

Your mail system has modified the email – added it as an attachment.
What is the attachment called? We should be able to work out the format from the name.

        cheers, Paul

    • #2210615

The email that I received and was put into the spam folder was a reply that I sent to support here. I doubt whether teknik decided to attach the newsletter to an email. I assume an attachment is on the part of the person composing the email.

The newsletter was attached to the email reply to mine as an eml file which I could not open. I downloaded it and converted it to mht which notepad opened. It didn’t look great so I used an online site and converted to pdf which reads as poor as the mht file.

Truthfully, I’ll have to unsubscribe from the free newsletter at that email address.

Never received today’s newsletter. (3-30). I do appreciate the opportunity to receive these. I did see the first one. Thank You

You should have it by now. Did it turn up?

Thank you for the reply. No sir, I have not seen it. I also checked spam and nothing there.

    • #2212775

I have now received the newsletter. Thank you and take care
