The wdmain8.hlp file is corrupted on both my drive and the CD, according to Word. Is there a site where I might download a fresh copy of that (and other Word help files associated with it, on the assumption they’re all bad)? Thank you.

I am not aware of a site that lets you download Word files. However, if you have a registered copy of a Word CD that is corrupt, I would contact Microsoft & ask for a replacement.

That seems improbable. Maybe if you delete the index files that Winhelp automatically creates (these have extensions like .cnt, .ftg, .fts and .gid), it will take a fresh look at the file and think it’s okay again.

I looked at those extensions and saw many files. Which ones relate to Word specifically? Or can I safely delete the whole list? Thanks for the idea.

The Word ones probably have names like wdmain8.gid, but if you delete them, Winhelp will re-create them, so you could just drag them all into a temporary folder and see if that helps. If it doesn’t work, or something goes terribly wrong, you could drag them back.
