I first have to say that I do not use Excel often, and so am not as adept as i am, say, with Word. Even so, I know this is a basic question. I have a chart with, say 10 columns. One column, call it Term, has entries that are either F, W or Y. I need a formula that will tell me how many of each of those values are in the column. I’ve mucked about with COUNTA and DCOUNTA, but never seem able to put in values that work.

If anyone would be kind enough to give me a template, I’d be grateful

    TIA, Michael

You can use COUNTIF for this. Say that your data are in A1:A40, then =COUNTIF($A$1:$A$40,”F”) will count the number of F’s. See attached workbook for a variation that uses a named range.
